Why won't Pip accept any more money from Magwitch?
Herbert is in friend mode here, and he is really good at it. Do you think his plan of getting Magwitch safely out of the country will work? Is it even a good plan?

Pip won't accept any more money from him because he is still trying to get over the fact that Magwitch, the man who scared him as a child, is his benefactor. Pip even acts disgusted to look at him because he pictures the man in the marshes. Another reason why he won't accept any money from him is because Pip is already in huge debt as it is and he feels that he will never afford to pay him back. Herbert's plan for getting Magwitch out of the country is a good plan, but not the smartest plan. Herbert and Pip are already in huge debt, they can't affored to get themselves out of the country.
There is an understanding between the two friends that Magwitch is looking to buy a slew of impressive things to continue upping Pip's image as a gentleman, so the only way to stop him is for Pip to cut off his own funding. Pip and Herbert also plan on trying to get Magwitch out of the country to get rid of him and keep him safe, so it wouldn't be very thoughtful of Pip to continue spending the man's money. I don't think that the plan is going to work out. There would be no conflict in its success, and conflict is what propels a novel forward. Besides, it isn't a very good plan to begin with. Pip has to leave with Magwitch and has the intention of returning to England without him; I highly doubt that Magwitch will be okay with this, seeing how attached he is to the kid.
Pip doesn't want any more money from Magwitch because of the fact that he's getting the money from Magwitch. I think the realization that he's getting his money from someone he doesn't know and someone that he really finds repulsive makes him want no more to do with Magwitch, so he no longer wants any money from him. This whole situation with Pip finding out who has been giving him all his wealth makes me like Herbert's character even more. He is just such a good person, but he's also not a perfect person, so his character is really nice to have. In theory the plan to get Magwitch out of the country is great, since it's what needs to be done to prevent Pip from getting into a tight spot. Though getting Magwitch to even agree to leave the country is going to be extremely hard since he already has this elaborate plan in his head to safely stay in the country.
Pip continues to feel embarrassed that his rise in standing was due to a convict that has worked so hard for Pip in Austrailia for so many years. Pip feels bad that all the money Magwitch is making is going towards Pip's "becoming a gentleman." He therefore believes that he must stop taking money from Magwitch and get rid of him. Also, Pip finds Magwitch as rather frightening and mysterious. He does not talk as much around him and acts very scared in Magwitch's presence. Because Magwitch is a convict and not safe in England and because Pip feels guilty for all the money Magwitch gave him, he decides that the best option is to get rid of Magwitch. Herbert comes up with the idea to get Magwitch out of England. Seeing that Herbert came up with the plan to get Magwitch out of England, I do not think that it will work very well. Herbert does not seem to be the smartest character in the novel from earlier events in the novel. The plan seems to simple and too easy to work. I do not believe that Magwitch is going to be too willing to just travel out of England and leave Pip.
First things first I think Herbert is such a wonderful friend. He truly sounds like he wants to help Pip out. I think that the plan Herbert came up with was a decent enough plan. I mean it was a good starting idea, and any good idea has room for development. That makes me think that maybe it will work. I think it will need to be tweaked because of problems like Magwitch not wanting to leave Pip, but it has potential to be a success. And it's not like Pip had anything better to offer. I also think Pip is going to stop taking money from Magwitch mainly out of fear. I think he's afraid of how attached he is to him and the whole debt situation. Most of Pip's actions in life have been made out of fear.
I think Herbert’s idea of getting Abel out of the country is a good idea but I do not think it is thought out well enough. Their plan for getting Abel out of the country puts to much to chance. For one they could miss the ships either because they run late or the ships leave early. Also assuming their timing is right they have to get the ships attention and then they still have to hope that the ship stops and bring them aboard. But even though I do not think that this is a very good plan I think that it is still possible that they will get Abel out of the country but I doubt that things will go according to plan.
Pip's image of his benefactor might have been a bit dramatic and over the top. He probably expected someone that's well known and is extremely wealthy, but to his disappointment his benefactor is the prisoner that traumatized Pip years ago. After finding out that Magwitch worked so hard just to make Pip comfortable, Pip becomes guilty and nauseous that someone like Magwitch would so something for him. The plan to get Magwitch out of the country would be the most logical step, but seeing as how it seems rushed, is not well executed.
Pip's dream has always been to marry Estella. Having money and being treated as rich was nothing in comparison to the connections Pip was hoping to establish as a gentlemen. Therefore, when Pip discovers Magwitch, a dirty, unconnected crook, to be his benefactor, he sees his future crumble. In a way it's sad to see that Pip is so ungrateful for the things Magwitch appears to do out of his own heart. It is understandable, however, that Pip would be afraid of the man he had involuntarily helped as a child. Either way, it is clear Pip is in a tight fix with no good plan out.
The reason for Pip not accepting anymore money from Magwitch is simple. He does have a small conscience somewhere in his "gentleman" head. Would anybody with a soul continue to take money from someone they are planning on shipping out of town and hoping to never deal with again in their life? No. I feel the plan is a good idea with the little time they have to come up with a better one. However, many things are still left up to chance with the plan as others have pointed out.
Pip would never want anything to do with someone lower than himself. By accepting money from a lowly convict would be against his morals. Also, Pip is still very frightened of Magwitch. He can't stand how attached Magwitch is too him; it creeps him out. As for Herbert, I don't really like how it was planned, and I doubt it will work out. They probably won't be able to get Magwitch out of the country.
Pip is in charge of his own life for the first time. He was terrified of Magwitch when he was younger and now fears that taking his money is going to give Magwitch control of him again. Herbert is doing what all friends do...creating a way to save his friend from harm. The plan may be a little shaky, and probably won't work, because in literature the story lines seldom come in neat packages. Most likely, there will be a sharp turn of events that keeps Magwitch entwined in Pip life for much longer than he and Herbert want.
