Why does Pip want Miss Havisham to help Herbert? Why do you think she agrees to do so?
Why is Estella marrying Drummle? Of all the men, as Pip says, why this dreadful brute? What do you think?

Another cliffhanger -- Why would Wemmick warn Pip not to go home? What could possibly be waiting for him there?

Pip seems to think that Miss Havisham owes him from letting him think she was his secret benefactor for so many years. He asks for help for Herbert, a generous request for his friend with no benefit for him. She then watches Estella blatantly refuse Pip's love and starts to pity him and honors his request for Herbert. It is in this chapter where Pip finally realizes that he has no hope of rekindling a love with Estella. After she announces her impending marriage to Drummle Pip is devastated. To not return his feelings would be one thing, but to marry one of Pip's enemies seems to destroy him. As Estella becomes increasingly cruel to Pip, Miss Havisham seems become more sympathetic towards him. Miss Havisham is fully realizing the monster she created in Estella and the extent that she hurts others. This causes her to feel remorse as well as to pity the pain caused to Pip. In the end of the chapter Pip is warned to not go home. There's a possibility of problems with Magwitch, or Compeyson may have located the group.
I thought that this chapter was very emotional for Pip. It seems like he now figures out the truth about Miss Havisham and that she only used him to torture him with Estella. He is heartbroken when Estella tells him that she will marry Drummle, and from that day forward he tries to forget about his feelings for her. Pip wants Miss Havisham to help Herbert because he wants his friend to have a "lasting service in life" but he doesn't want him to know about it. I agree with Sam that Pip asks Miss Havisham to do this because he feels that she owes him something because he thought that she was his benefactor. It seems that Estella is somewhat expected to marry Drummle from her peers. From the way that she talks to Pip, it seems that she does not really love or have feelings for Drummle. She is only marrying him possibly under Miss Havisham's wishes.
Pip has deep emotions for Herbert and it no wonder why he wants the bet for him and his future. Herbert is close to blood with Miss Havisham, I think Miss Havisham agrees to help out Herbert because she has made the same observation that Pip has, that Herbert is not like the other Pockets, that he actually is a genuine person who has a deep heart and deserves the money for his future. also, Miss Havisham sees how passinate Pip is towards Herbert and owes him for the stress of his expectations. Estella is marrying Drummle I believe because to marry a brute like him that most men despise and see as a disgusting human, would hurt the men who hve loved and or lusted for her. Because for someone as beautiful as Estella to take a man like Drummle, would make all the men feel like Drummle was seen as better in her eyes, which would kill most men inside, especially Pip, for having such a past with Drummle. The whole reason Miss Havisham was creating Estella into this monster was to make men suffer as she had. But to see Pip have feeligs of true love towards Estella, makes her regret the creates she created because she can sympathize with Pip and his heartbreak. Seeig Pip get hurt causes Miss Havisham to feel pity and remorse for Pip since he is a genuine man, unlike Miss Havishams fiancé was. Since I already read all the chapters, I know why Wemmick wrote that letter, so a response here would be pretty biased.
Pip wants Miss Havisham to help Herbert because he feels he soon might be unable to do so and doesn’t want to let Herbert down. I think she agreed to do so because she felt bad for Pip and knew how he felt when she was left at the altar years before. This is also the same reason Miss Havisham looked heartbroken for Pip when Estella said she didn’t love him. I think Miss Havisham realized the trouble she caused by seeing someone else hurt the way she once did. However, it was too late for Miss Havisham to change things, so instead she just felt sorry for Pip.
This chapter definitely portrays a change in Miss Havisham. The reader starts to see the pity Miss Havisham has for Pip due to her leading Pip on to believe she was his benefactor and how Miss Havisham was seeking revenge on Pip (for all men) by breaking his heart. Pip finds it reasonable to have Miss Havisham help Herbert for Pip realizes he may no longer be able to provide his friend, and he truly believes Herbert is a deserving man. Estella seems like she's going right along with Miss Havisham's plan of not only destroying Pip's heart but of all men. Miss Havisham later connects with Pip's heartbreak over Estella's rejection and feels pity for making him go through the same remorse she had felt.
Pip wants Miss. Havisham to help Herbert because he knows that Herbert won't get far in life without help. Pip possibly not caring for his own fortune anymore, sees that he can no longer sustain his dear friend and asks for someone that's close by. He convinces Miss Havisham that Herbert's family is nothing like the greedy members within Miss Havisham and that they are the ones worth helping. Estella is marrying Drummle as part of her brainwashing done by Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham groomed and raised Estella to be the most perfect lady in the presence of men. In doing so, she also set up Estella to crush men's hearts as Miss Havisham's heart was so crushed years ago. Estella is the one thing most men cannot have and Miss Havisham relishes upon this fact and get revenge upon all men by doing so.
I agree that Estella may be marrying Drummle to crush other mens hearts, as she seems to have been taught early in life by Miss Havisham. Perhaps also she feels she needs to punish herself for something, so she wants to marry a "brute." However, on a similar note, Drummle may not be the brute Dickens continually portrays through Pip's point-of-view. Pip is obviously biased against the man who slouches and doesn't bother kissing butt. So maybe Estella is marrying Drummle because she likes him, regardless of Pip's view of the situation.
Ms. Havisham agreed to helping Herbert because she feels she owes Pip, yes. But I also think Pip chose a good time to ask Ms. Havisham, because he also believed she owed him. Why not Drummle? Other than her beauty, Estella is just as bad as Drummle. I think their rude personalities mesh pretty well actually. At least now one won't be walking all over the other. Ms. Havisham never realized that it is not all men that need to be punished and all women are victims. By raising Estella to the person that she is, Estella has become the evil man in Ms. Havisham's story, and Pip has become Ms. Havisham. She did not only develop another heart breaker, but she realizes that she might've easily ruined another person's life, just as hers was ruined, due to her blind vengence. I really suspect significant changes in Ms. Havisham's attitude and actions.
I agree with others that Estella may be marrying Drummle due to Miss Havisham’s plan to gain revenge on men. I feel bad for Pip because he tries so hard to win Estella’s heart and she still shows no affection towards him. It appears to me that Estella may overuse the excuse that Miss Havisham brought her up as a tool to break the hearts of men. If she is able to understand how Miss Havisham has raised her, I don’t think that she is entirely brainwashed. Pip even tells Estella that he would rather see her marry someone who loves her as dearly as he does, even if it is not him. I think that Miss Havisham has such a look of horror on her face because she finally feels some pity for Pip. Pip basically pours his heart and feelings out for Estella when he tells her how much he loves and cares about her. Even though Miss Havisham’s lifelong goal has been to gain her revenge on men, she seems to feel horrible for putting Pip through such a hard situation.
Pip is continuing to be the irrational Pip that we know so well. He shows so much emotion in this chapter for fear of losing Estella. How odd that Estella, who does not seem to have emotion, stirs up such emotion in Pip. I find the whole idea of Estella marrying Drummle very interesting. Why would anyone marry such a brute? Well Estella did mention that Miss Havisham did not agree with her marrying so quickly, and Estella explained her actions by saying that she was getting tired. Maybe Estella's early marriage and awful pick of a husband is a subtle sign of rebellion against Miss Havisham? Perhaps Estella is starting to dislike her robot-like ways of life (even if it may be subconsiously), and is trying to break away from the life she's known? This whole marriage to Drummle thing does not sit well with me. I feel like there may be new potential in Estella's life. As of right now, I don't think Estella will be with Drummle for long. Maybe she'll even end up with Pip after all?
