Why do you think people used to dress up so nicely to travel? Some still do today, though not so much. How do you dress when you are going on a flight or maybe even taking a cruise ship somewhere? What is acceptable these days?

The government makes the shipping of animals from one zoo to another especially hard because they want to limit fraud and illegal sale of animals. All of the paperwork would be the authorization of sale, and the authenticity certificates for all of the animals to be sold. Most of the animals were sent out of the country as well so there would need to be extra paperwork for the sale across borders.
People dress up for travel so they can make a good impression on the people that will see them. A good impression, even in passing, is better to some people than a okay impression even for people you most likely will never see again. When I go on a flight, or on a cruise I most always dress comfortably. I find it a million times better to be comfortable than to make other people think that I always dress nicely, or look good all of the time. Especially for the younger generations dressing down during travel is acceptable. Smelling like a hobo, or being dirty on the other hand is not acceptable at all.
Governments make the shipping of animals from one zoo to another so difficult to limit the amount of illegal activity that commonly happens. By making it more difficult to ship animals it loses populairty because of the time and money that would be needed to put in. All of the paperwork put into the shipment of animals has to deal with the certificates for the animals and the authorization of them being sold. The paperwork, because there is so much of it, also contributes to the unpopularity of the illegal selling of animals. The paperwork takes a lot of time and in the end if the animals are not authorized it costs a lot of money and has become a waste of time. People dress up for travel for the simple idea of a first impression. They want other people to notice them and to notice them as a nice looking person even though they may never see them again. As for me, when I travel I dress comfortably. I do not want to have to sit on a flight in uncomfortable clothes, the flight alone is normally uncomfortable. Most of the time when I am traveling I am going on vacation so I want to be carefree and comfortable. Although this is my preferance, other people still choose to dress up, either way is acceptable these days.
Though it has been covered pretty well by the comments before me, governments make it difficult to ship animals from one zoo to another to prevent illegal sales. It is also partly that the government is concerned with animal well being, for example they do not want a tropical animal being sent to a climate such as Alaska. Also the government is concerned with the extinction of endangered species. The endangered species involve much more paperwork as to ensure the safety of the species itself. Overall though, shipping animals requires so much paperwork because shipping live creatures takes much more care and attention than just non-perishable products. It is a combination of the safety of the animals and the attention to illegal sales.
In my opinion, people used to dress up nicely to travel because traveling was something special. Traveling years ago was a special occasion and a big deal. Travel was expensive and time consuming. Though I've never flown or taken a cruise ship, I've found that people dress more casually now. Partially for comfort, but also for ease in security in airports. It is acceptable to be dressed casually while traveling now because of the extensive security measures and just a different day in age. Along the same lines, travel and vacations are more common now than back in the day, so traveling is not as much of a special occasion, therefore the cause of casual dress.
I think that people used to dress so nicely during travel because back then traveling was considered a luxury. Only the few who could afford it were able to tour new places. They wore nice clothes in attempt to look like important figures while traveling. Also, it was a rare occasion so they brought out their best attire for the event.
When I travel I almost always wear sweat pants or jeans, and a t-shirt or sweatshirt if it's cold. I go for comfort and am not concerned what I look like to others. These days we have so much security to go through that you have to take off most of the things you have with you at some point anyway. If I was to wear a fancy belt or jewelry I would most likely have to remove it going through security and people these days don't want to risk losing their nice things on an airplane flight. I'd say that in this day and age, dressing down while traveling is acceptable.

This process involves so much paperwork because offers, permits, transportation, and prices are discussed. I think people used to dress up so nicely for travel because they would want people who did not know them to think highly of them. When I go on a flight I dress comfortable because I know I will be on the plain for at least a couple of hours. I think anything is acceptable these days because everyone has their own sense of style depending on their personality, where they are from, or who they are around.
People dressed so nicely because it was important to have a good first impression, even if it was somebody you did not know. You never know when you can meet you future boss, or future husband, and people were always aware on how they presented themselves to others. Now that is not so much the case because modern people have the mindset that they will never see anyone at an airport ever again so who cares if they see me wearing duck pajama pants with an over-sized T-shirt because I am comfortable gosh darn it! This is why I always go to the airport in my Sunday best, because I am a lady. Actually I wear sweats and a T-shirt because I will never see those people again and it’s comfortable.
There was a lot of paperwork for shipping the zoo animals to a different country because the government wants to stop illegal selling of animals. As the book said at that time the animals were selling for good prices because of a newly enforced law by CITES. The government wanted to make sure that the animals being shipped are not wild animals just caught from the wild. They wanted to make sure that they were real and that they had been in zoos.
I think people back then dressed up so nicely because they wanted to create the impression that they were rich and High-Class. When I go travel I unusually dress what’s most comfortable for me and I think that’s what’s acceptable these days. Not many people dress up for flights unless if their on a business trip or something important.
I think people used to dress up to travel as a way of making a good impression on others. First impressions are the longest lasting so by looking nice, they are remembered as nice, clean cut, wealthy people. This doesnt happen very much anymore. Traveling has become so common and such a way of life for us that people really dont care to get all dolled up. the government wanted to limit the illegal sale of exotic animals by making there more paperwork.
So much paperwork was involved in the shipping of the animals because, like the comments above say, it prevents a majority of illegal sales from happening. With all the trouble that paperwork brings, people trying to sell animals illegally lose interest because it takes too much time and money.

When I travel, I wear comfortable clothes to make the journey comfortable. If I'm going to be on a several hour long flight, I don't want to be sitting in uncomfortable clothes.

When I go on a flight, I typically wear clothes that I find comfortable to be in, even when the space I'm in is not always the most comfortable. For people my age, it is very acceptable to dress down while traveling. However, its common to see people older than me wanting to dress casual, but still nicer while traveling.
It is very interesting why governments make it so difficult to ship animals. This is mostly for safety precautions and to make sure the animals are in good shape. It involves a lot of paperwork because of how expensive animals are and the work it takes to ship and retrieve them. There is a ton work put in to ship animals, let alone from India to Canada.

Traveling in that age was rare and only few could afford it, especially if you went on a fancy ship. Today people do not dress as fancy but rather for comfort. I am certaintly a person that rides in comfort. Occasionaly I might wear a jacket or tennis shoes in the panic or idea of crashing and being prepared. Now a days this is acceptable, and truthfully if you are someone who dresses up to travel people will give you weird looks. Travel today is more of a casual thing because for most people it is not fun but rather something you have to do to get to the needed destination.

It was something the elite few could do.Now,people dress comfortably when they travel.The only time people dress formally is if it is for buisness. I prefer to dress comfy, it's more convient.
I think people used to dress up so nicely to travel because travelling used to be like a special occasion. People didn’t travel all the time like they do now so they wanted to look their best. Now, people travel all the time. There are some people who travel every time they have a break from work or school so it’s not that big of a deal to dress up.
When I travel, I like to wear comfortable clothes like jeans, sweats, pajama pants, and t-shirts. If I were taking a cruise ship somewhere, I would probably wear something a little nicer than sweats and a t-shirt but still nothing super fancy. Dressing casual while travelling is what is more acceptable now. Not many people wear nice clothes just to travel anymore.
I believe they make it so difficult to ship animals from zoo to zoo is a form of protection for the animals. If they require the paperwork, it will hopefully prevent the fraud and illegal transport and sales of the animals. If it is being done illegal, they may be less interested in going through all the red tape and paperwork.

If you look at the Titinic, you see how the rich dressed in their very best and the lower class were wearing more like work clothes. That is how the ship hands determined what levels they were allowed on too. Now, people care less about ecomical status and dress more for comfort. I think wearing nice jeans/shorts and t-shirt to fly is acceptable.
I think that people used to dress so nicely during travel because not many people could afford to, so they wanted to make a good first impression and they looked important and like higher class citizens. I'm sure flying then was less important then as to how it is now. Also it was probably easier, less security and danger involved. Now a days people dress comfortably when they travel, seeing people dressed up is odd to us.

People dress up nicely when traveling because as of the middle of the previous century, one had to be rich to travel. When I travel anywhere today it's generally in jeans and a t-shirt. What's acceptable to travel in today is anything your comfortable in as long as it's not breaking any laws.
I think that the government requires a lot of paperwork when transporting animals to create the impression that it is a secure transit. People wouldn't be too happy if they thought that zookeepers were just loading tigers into the backs of their pickup trucks and zipping down the highway willy-nilly. Some of this is undoubtedly for actual security, but some (in my opinion) is simply so people feel secure. As Pi says earlier in the book, many animals would fall out of a city if you turned it upside down.
My great-grandma was born in 1913 and she lived on a farm in rural Ohio. About ten years ago, she wrote a book about her childhood memories, and one of the subjects she extensively covered was travel. They lived about five miles away from the nearest town, which was really only two or three shops and a church. Twenty or so miles away was a "large" town, though it would still be small by our standards.
They rarely traveled to the large town as a family; when business needed to be taken care of her father and maybe one of her older brothers would go. When the whole family when, though, for one of their first communions or a family wedding or other big event, it was a big deal. Not only was it a rarity, which in and of itself made it special, but it was also much more luxuriousness than their farm life. They dressed up, then, not only to celebrate the special occasion but also to look presentable for the fancier city-folk.
Nowadays, since people travel regularly and for mundane purposes, most people don't dress up. Some even dress down for comfort. Yet, on the whole, I find that people are far more concerned with physical appearances nowadays. Strange.
