Chapter 20: London Town

Apparently, Pip hasn't conquered the custom of tipping...

What are the first descriptive impressions Pip gives us of London? What about Jaggers' office?

What can you make of Jaggers' profession and character based on his interactions with the people who are waiting to see him? What kind of man is he? What kind of lawyer is he?

When Pip arrives in London, he calls it "rather ugly, crooked, narrow, and dirty." He seems both amazed and displeased, wishing it to be something more. When Pip arrives to Jagger's office, we can tell Jaggers is a very powerful and important man in London. There are hordes of people waiting outside his office for the slight chance of talking to him! Inside the office Pip notes that it is kept very clean with very few papers askew, and light by only skylight. He also makes note of two casts of human heads sitting on top of books by Jaggers desk. This seems like it should have a deeper meaning and give us more insight into Jaggers character. Based on Jaggers interaction with people, I think that he feels like he is superior than everyone else. He only cares about the money he gets from each case, rather then his victim. From the crowd of begging people, he get the impression he is one of the best lawyers around.

It seems as if Jaggers is hiding something. His mannerisms and the ways he deals with people are dark and mysterious and perhaps even rude. He tends to be mean and scary. Though he seems to be very famous in the town of London, he seems to scare almost everyone that he talks to. In a later chapter he is seen in court giving a rather frightening "speech" in which everyone in the courtroom, including the judge look scared to death. He also seems to be above everyone else. He is a very rich upperclass citizen and even acts superior to all the other townspeople. He must be a pretty good lawyer, however, if people are standing out in the streets to greet and praise him when he leaves the courthouse. From the "speech" he gave in the pub after Wopsle read the story of the murder trial from the newspaper and then decided that the "murderer" was guilty, suggests that Jaggers is a criminal lawyer. Being a criminal lawyer, this gives the impression also that Jaggers may be involved in some "scandalous activities."

I was not surprised when Pip described London as "crooked, narrow, and dirty". I feel like London is always described that way. Pip also reveals his big head again, when he refuses to pay the coachman more than a shilling. Mr. Jaggers sounds like a very powerful man, one that would walk upon anyone and anything to get what he wants. From the way townspeople whisper his name and cower in his presence shows that my speculations aren't far from the truth. I hope Pip doesn't take after him, though I think he will.

Mr Jaggers seems to be a very powerful criminal laywer but he also seems mysterious and like he is doing some dirty business. When his assistant says "arter a deal o' trouble I've found one sir, as might do" and Jaggers responds by saying "what is he prepared to swear?" it sounds like Jaggers is using some sort of false witness in one of his cases. It is obvious that he is very powerful because there are people waiting outside for a chance to talk to him and everyone seems to know his name. It seems as though he is only interested in power and money and not in the actual cases.

When Pip enters Jaggers office, he immediately describes its gloomy and creepy atmosphere. The only light entering the room is that from a skylight, and the room is filled with strange objects. Pip points out two casts that he finds sitting on a shelf. When Pip looks at Jaggers’s chair, he compares it to a coffin. Pip then describes how the wall across from Jaggers’s chair is greasy from clients’ shoulders. The fact that Jaggers’s clients have a habit of backing up to the wall shows that Jaggers is probably a very controlling and intimidating lawyer. When Pip experiences the way people try to get Jaggers’s attention, he realizes that Jaggers is very powerful. Jaggers has no intentions of talking to the people who keep trying to get his attention; he simply swats them out of his way and continues walking. And like Robin said, he seems to be more concerned with the money he makes than with the actual people who need his assistance.

London is pretty shabby, and it's not exactly what Pip was thinking it would be. Everything Pip sees in London is really dirty and run down. Jagger's office is also dirty, being described as grimy and dusty. The overall feel of the office is just dark and creepy, not really the place you would think of being a lawyer's office. Based on the way that Jagger's deals with the people waiting for him, it seems like he's the type who just cares about getting the job done, rather than getting to know his clients in order to help them. He just kind of brushes them off, making them do other things before he'll even speak to them. Jagger's is just an odd character at this point; he's really kind of mysterious. It's not like Pip really knows him, he doesn't talk much, and is overall pretty creepy.

Pip's observations of London were kind of grim. He described it as a dirty place with narrow streets. His reaction was more excitement then feelings that London is a bit overrated.Jaggers office is also describes as being filthy and grimy, which is odd considering that Jaggers is supposed to be this upstanding and sophisticated man. Jaggers seems like he is a good lawyer, but certain things suggest that he doesn't conduct his bussiness in the most appropriate ways. He may cheat the system a little bit. He is described as one being dark and a little scary. He deals with his clients in a very cold manner, but he must have a high rate of court wins considering all that come to him.

He is very underwhelmed by the notion of living in London. Pip describes of a place grimy, melancholy, and brutal. London was the place everyone dreamed of back in his small town. Now that Pip sees it first hand, he knows that all the hype surrounding it, isn't true. Jagger seems to be a ruthless person who is good at what he does but also seems to be a bit crooked. It sounds like he does some shady deals for his combat with the law and takes any kind of advantage he can get.

I don't think Pip was having a big head when he didn't tip the coach...I think he was just not used to the custom and didn't know it was good manners, which heightens the whole newness idea of London to Pip. Pip is also horrified of the idea of public execution in London, something that most there would find as entertainment. These events show how Pip is not yet accustomed to his new environment.

I believe Jaggers is a very successful lawyer, and is good at what he does. Unfortunately, it seems as though he only cares for himself, which, as a lawyer, does not seem very suited. A lawyer is trying for the best of their client, but when his clients want to talk to him, he dismisses them and displays his aggravation that they would come to see him.

To Pip's dismay, London is very dirty and rundown city which contrasts with his high expectations of his arrival. My first impression of Mr. Jaggers' was acting very superior and harsh towards his clients. By having so much business and people constantly needing him, I feel Mr. Jaggers finds himself of great importance. Sure he is a successful lawyer, but he may not have the right intentions for his clients. Like Chelsea had said, I'm sure Mr. Jaggers does a good job but may cheat the system a little bit.

I don't think Pip intended on being big headed, I think he just wasn't used to having to tip someone or know much about the whole thing, like Rachel said. It's no surprise that Pip finds London to be dirty and rundown, since that city holds that reputation. Jagger's character has always been somewhat cold and unfriendly, so it's no surprise to see that attitude come out in his work as well. He seems to be a very important, and famous lawyer with the people yet I don't think he cares much about the people or his clients. I think he's cocky and I really hope he gets knocked down a peg or two somehow.

Pip was expecting London to be such a lavish city, when he got there he is very disappointed. He describes the city as "rather ugly, crooked, narrow, and dirty." Mr. Jaggers is without a doubt a very respected man among the people of London. However, he is very rude and inconsiderate. It is as if he thinks he is superior to everyone else. His social status may be very high, but he posses no moral status. It is clear that he shows little care for his clients. This man, is the influence that Pip does not need in his life. Yet, because Pip yearns to be a gentlemen (a man of high social status) Mr. Jaggers is the perfect model.

I was a little surprised that Pip didn't tip the coach driver. I mean, I guess I should have seen it coming though, because he is getting a bit snobby, but I didn't think he had gotten that far yet. Pip describes London as somewhat grim, which is somewhat surprising to me, and I think Pip was also a bit disappointed. Ok, this blog clarified for me that Mr. Jaggers is definitely a lawyer. I was a bit confused. He seems like a very powerful figure in this society. He knows what he wants and he knows that he's good at what he does and he can use that to get what he wants. He seems to me like almost a dictator in his specific industry. People come to him, even though he isn't particularly nice to them, because they know that he can get the job done.

Pip seems like he had greater expectations of London. Although he still is excited to finally be in London, he seems disappointed in the dirty, crooked city. At home Jaggers is perceived to be this well profound lawyer and seems to be just as important in London. People wait around outside and whisper his name...seems strange to me but apparently they are in awe of him. I think they are scared of him. Jagger seems as dirty as the city, and I do not like him, I feel like he is hiding something.

I think the fact that London is described as a dirty, ugly, and askew place says something of his future and of his benefactor's wishes. Also the fact that Jaggers is a criminal Lawyer. Jaggers seems to keep things spotless, maybe perhaps because he is trying to keep a dirt secret. But it is odd why Pip would be in such a place, it seems to take his innocence away and the kind of conflicts change.
Jaggers is apparently a good lawyer because of the many people wanting to see him. He might not be the most honest lawyer, he might just care about winning the case.

Upon Pip's forst visit to London, he describes the city as "Rather ugly, narrow, crooked, and dirty." This would be rather fitting, as one would think of the post-industrial revolution era of London as dark, dirty and pungently odered. With an overcrowded city filled of cheaply paid workers could anyone expect less? Also Pip is forced by his emotional well-being to leave Mr. Jagger's incredibly depressing office in hopes of bettering his ailing mood. He describes the office of being accompanied by an old rusty revolver, a sword in a scabbard and a chair that closely resembles a coffin...sound odd enough? Perhaps Mr. Jagger may have something to hide!

This chapter wasn't as bad because you get to see London and meet some new characters.I'm glad Pip sees London as it truly is instead of glorifying it to meet his expectations. Jaggers really seems like a powerful man, which surprises me for some reason. The way he talked in the bar made me think of him as more of a strange courier instead of a strong-willed lawyer. People see him as a celebrity almost.

At first, London seems overly fancy and it seems like they are treating Pip specially because he is rich. He is put in a coach with everything packed as if they were going to travel for miles, just to go a short distance, then a one-eyed man that was waiting was kicked out of a room in favor of Pip.
Jaggers seems like a shady person. The coach driver is wary of his house and isn't surprised that Jaggers' visitor wouldn't tip. Jagger's clerk shoved out a one eyed man without guilt. The office also was described as dark and dismal, and slightly run-down. For a lawyer, he didn't have many papers, but he did have strange packages and boxes. The walls seem to Pip as if the client had shuffled along the wall of backed up against it. These actions sound like the client fear Jaggers. He seems like a criminal layer- someone who deals with shady people, and has no morals, just greed for money. Jaggar's office is also suspiciously close to Newgate Prison.
