The Tiger's Wife: Chapter 10

What explanation can you come up with for Arlo's death based on the information provided? What causes the awkwardness in the conversation between the narrator and Fra Anton as he tells the story of his brother's death?

Why do you think Fra Anton is so protective of the narrator? What is he protecting her from (or, rather, what does he think he is protecting her from)?

Who takes the jar? Why do you think she follows the man?

The best explanation I can come up with for Arlo's death is that he was out with friends before the war started and someone came through and found them thinking they were the enemy. It's not completely logical but it is possible. The awkwardness in the conversation is caused because the narrator did not know how to respond to being told that Fra Anton's brother was dead. The narrator did not know how to console him or truly how to react in that situation.

I think Fra Anton is so protective of the narrator because he might see her as a sibling, or feel responsible for her. He wasn't able to protect Arlo so he is protecting the narrator instead. I think he is protecting her from the stories of the town. He is also protecting her from the people that do not believe in the burial of the heart or those who dig up what was buried at the crossroads.

It would make sense that the deathless man took the jar. She follows the man because she believes that it could be the deathless man and he could give her some answers about her grandfather.

Based on the information provided, Arlo's death seems to be because of the paramilitary from Natalia's country. They seemed to be pretending to be Arlo's friend, but were just going to kill him when they planned to go on the camping trip. It becomes awkward between Fra Anton and the narrator because Natalia finds out that the paramilitary was from her country who killed his brother.

I think Fra Anton is so protective of the narrator because he feels that she is his responsibility because she is helping his town. She is only trying to improve the town so not only does he owe it to her to keep her protected, but also his community. He is trying to protect her from grave robbers and probably Dure and his family. He feels that both could get frustrated with her and try to hurt her.

I believe the deathless man takes the jar. She follows the person who takes the jar because she believes that it may be the deathless man as well. By following him she thinks that she may be able to talk to him and find out more about him, which will reveal some about her grandfather and his story.

Going by the provided information, Arlo was killed by the paramilitary who pretended they were friends. The awkwardness is because the military was from Natalia's family and Fra Anton doesn't want to make it sound like he is blaming Natalia personally for Arlo's death. Natalia also doesn't know how to reply to Fra Anton when he says Arlo dies. She seems surprised to find out he is dead so suddenly when she had assumed that Arlo was alive. She also doesn't want to say "i'm sorry" and come off as somewhat insincere but accidently blurts it out anyway.

I think Fra Anton is protective of Natalia because it's just in his nature to look out for others. He takes care of all of the children and always wants what's best for everyone. He also appreciates the help that Natalia is and wants to thank her for her services.

I would assume that the deathless man took the jar. Natalia follows him in an attempt to ask him about her grandfather. Hopefully he will be able to give Natalia the answers she wants.

A man comes to take the jar. The narrator follows him because she believes he is the deathless man, the man she thinks was the last to have spoken to her grandfather. She wants to speak to him about her grandfather and death. In reality, though, it is not the deathless man that takes the jar. It is just a random man that is collecting the things people set out for the dead.

Based on the information provided, I believe Arlo was betrayed by the kids that he went camping with at Bogomoljka. The kids that Arlo went with were actually serving with the paramilitary on the border. I think two things could have possibly happened: Either the kids turned on Arlo and killed him, or the kids turned Arlo in to the paramilitary, which killed him. The conversation between the narrator and Fra Antun about Fra Antun’s brother’s death is awkward because it is such a personal topic and Natalia cannot find any words besides “I’m sorry” to say to Fra Antun. The fact that it was actually the paramilitary from Natalia’s side of the border that had killed Arlo adds to the awkwardness of the conversation.

Fra Antun makes many excuses as to why Natalia should not stay at the crossroads overnight. Fra Antun says, “There are foxes out here, Doctor, that carry rabies – and obviously people who come here to drink. I can’t let you stay” (271). I believe that Fra Antun feels responsible to take care of Natalia. He will feel guilty if anything happens to her since he was the one that allowed her to stay there overnight.

When I first read the chapter, I thought it was the deathless man who took the jar. Natalia describes why she follows the man when she says, “And any doubt I’d had – in my grandfather’s stories, in my own sanity, in the wild darkness of the walk – fell away, and I was certain, certain that I was following the deathless man, certain of the madness that came with meeting him, the kind of madness that could make my grandfather tie a person to a cinder block and throw him into a pond, the kind of madness that was forcing me to throw my backpack over the chain and go down on my hands and knees and crawl into a minefield and stand up and keep going” (326). However, as I kept reading, I began to question whether the man carrying the jar really was the deathless man.

I think Arlo was killed by the kids who went on a camping trip with him. I didn't sense the awkwardness between Fra Antun and the narrator, but the two were in silence for a while and that is because Fra Antun could have accused Natalia of being paramilitary but he didn't. Fra Antun is protective of the narrator because he thinks she is a truly caring person. Fra Antun thinks he is protecting her from the dangers that come with darkness like foxes with rabies and drunk men. Natalia thinks the deathless man took the jar and she follows the man to see if he is the deathless man.

Arlo probably made friends with the wrong kids and maybe since they were from the other parliamentary they didn't like his opinions on things and killed him. Since they were just kids they might have been told to spy and kill if they saw a threat. Arlos might have been catching on and confronted them about it.
The awkwardness was caused by Natalia not telling Fra Anton about why she was in Zdrevkov this morning and the death of her grandfather was still a secret. She probably didn't expect Anton to bring up the subject of death but since he did she probably felt awkward hiding a death.
I think that Fra Anton knows something about what will happen if she stays all night, and he doesn't want that to happen.
I don't know who took the jar, but i think that it was someone who had a connection to it some how. I think that she follows the man to figure out who it is, and to see if it is the deathless man from the stories.

From the information that's provided, it seems that Arlo was killed by the paramilitary. The paramilitary pretended to be his friends but in actuality they were planning to kill him. It's awkward between Natalia and Fra Antun because the paramilitary was from Natalia's country and she feels bad about it, while he doesn't want it to seem like it's her fault. Fra Antun is so protective of the narrator because he sees her as his responsiblity now. It's in his nature to protect and he wasn't able to protect Arlo so he makes it his mission to protect others. At first it seems that the deathless man took the jar and Natalia may finally find the answers she is looking for. But after reading further it looks to just be a stranger.

Based on the information that Obreht gave us on Arlo, young members of the paramilitary on the border befriended Arlo. Arlo went camping with the kids, not knowing who they really were. When his family found him a week later, he was dead by their dumpster. I believe the kids he went camping with killed him and then left him in his driveway.
When Natalia started talking to Fra Anton about all of the paintings of Bis, she learned that the dog wasn’t Fra Anton’s, but his brother’s. Fra Anton then told her that his brother Arlo was dead, and the conversation became awkward because Natalia had no idea what to say, and her paramilitary was the one that killed Arlo.
Fra Anton is a genuinely good person, and he worried for the sake of Natalia. He told her it was too dangerous to stay out all night to watch the jar. He warned her of rabid foxes and drunk men.
It’s not made clear, but I believe that Barba Ivan took the jar. He talked about his wife not believing him after what happened to his son, which would have been Arlo. The man that took the jar obviously knew Natalia, and she knew him, too.

Based on the information provided, I think Arlo was betrayed by the "friends" he went camping with. The conversation becomes awkward betweem Fra Anton and Natalia because when Fra Anton says that it was the paramilitary that killed Arlo, Natalia realizes that it was the paramilitary form her side of the border that he is talking about.

Fra Anton feels that he is responsible for Natalia's well being while she is staying there. He doesn't want her to stay overnight because he wants to protect her from anything that could be lurking out there in the night.

When I was reading this part in the book, I immediately thought that the deathless man was the man who took the jar. As I kept reading, I started to believe that it was him even more because Natalia meantions that she thinks it is him as well. I think Natalia follows this man in hope that it is the deathless man and she can get the answers that her grandfather never got.

My explanation for Arlo's death is that he was killed by his friends that he went camping with, who were members of the paramilitary on the border. I guess when you meet friends quickly like Arlo did, it would be wise to get to know them a little bit better before going off on a weekend camping trip without anyone else around. The awkwardness between the narrator and Fra Anton when Fra Anton tells the story of his brother's death is due to the fact that the narrator is paramilitary. Also the narrator made an awkward apology in the middle of Fra Anton's story, before the story was finished being told. I found that to be sort of awkward.
Fra Anton is so protective of the narrator because he cares for her, and he knows that she is only there to do good things and find things out that are important to her. Fra Anton is caring for so many children, and the narrator can be of much help to him, so she is great to keep around. I believe he thinks he is protecting her from whoever comes to the crossroads and digs up the hearts because he feels that it is his duty to keep her safe, but he tries to beat around the bush and persuade her to come home by telling her there are foxes with rabies that come into the graveyard at night.
I do believe it was the deathless man who took the jar. I think maybe the jars that he collects at the crossroads may be the hearts of the people that he has had drink from his coffee cups. I think Natalia follows the person so she can get some answers to the many questions that she has. Most importantly, the reasoning for digging up the jars.

I believe Arlo’s death was caused by someone from the other side, trying to make trouble and cause a problem, and Arlo stood up for himself. The awkwardness in the conversation is very normal when talking about someone as if they are not deceased, then you come to find out they are. I really found the story of Bis touching though.

I believe Fra Anton is so protective of Natalia because he knows how much she is helping his community. He wants to hold on to the things that are good to him, and since he lost Arlo, he didn’t want to loose her. I think he is trying to protect her from death, when in some way she is searching for the relative of death.

I believe the deathless man takes the jar from the crossroads to waive the soul onto death. I am unsure though because the deathless man stated that he only takes people to the crossroads, not necessarily away from it. She follows the man in hopes he can give her some information of her grandfathers death.

I don’t really get what the point was for the paramilitary to kill a fifteen year old. From what I read it looks like the Paramilitary pretended to be friends with Arlo and then when they went camping they killed him because he was on the other side. It was an awkward conversation because the paramilitary that killed Arlo came from Natalia’s side.
I think that Fra Antun is so protective of Natalia because he’s the one who is taking her there, so he feels responsible to take her back. She became his responsibility once he took her to the crossroads. Also he doesn’t want something to happen to her because if something does he’ll feel guilty about it. He thinks he is protecting her from drunks and wild animals.
Natalia thinks that the deathless man took the jar, but I’m not really sure who actually took the jar. I think she follows the guy out of curiosity. She wants to find out if the Mora is real or if the guy is the deathless man. Then if he is the deathless man she wants to ask him questions. She basically wants answers for all her questions.

Morgan Rinckey said...

Fra Antun never mentions if any of the other boys were killed which leads me to believe that one of the friends killed Arlo. It is said that it was Natalia's paramilitary and the people Arlo was camping with were on vactation, possibly from her side of the country.

I think Death himself takes the jar. The deathless man only carries the souls and then delivers them to crossroads for his uncle. Since he picks up the jar as patyment, I think he is Death. She follows him to see if he has her grandfather.

Liz Joyce said...

Based on the details of the novel you are lead to believe that Arlo was betrayed by the parliamentary or vice versa. The conversations became awkward when Natalia could find no other was to mourn beside the words "I'm sorry", since when she spoke she did not sound sincere.
Fra Anton is not sure of Natalia's true intentions but feels they are not pure. He takes on the responsibilty of trying to make an effort of keeping Natalia safe. There is a possibilty that Fra Anton is grateful for her help but feels he may not trust Natalia.
You are lead to believe that the deathless man steals the jar. While continuing to read you are left perplexed not knowing who the character actually is.

Arlo was camping with a bunch of his friends, and they were all teenagers. They were probably up to no good, whether it be drugs, mischief, or anything else. The teenageres were probably doing something dangerous and Arlo died because of it. The kids were afraid to tell the family, because they would've been in trouble. Instead of telling someone, they left his body by the trash can, hoping the family would find him there soon. It may have been awkward because Natalia didn't say anything besides an poorly-timed “sorry.”
Fra Antum is afraid that someone will come to the grave and try to hurt Natalia. He's afraid some drunk men will stumble upon the grave and possibly see her. There is no telling what someone would do if they find a girl sitting by herself in the middle of the night.
It would make the story better if it did, indeed, turn out to be the deathless man. I already finished the book, though, and have inferred it to be Barba Ivan.

It appears that Arlo's death was because of the paramilitary. They had befriended him but killed him in the end.
The conversation is tense because of Fra Anton's relaxed manner about the situation and Natalia's sympathy that she isn't sure how to convey.
Fra Anton sees the good in Natalia and doesn't want any harm to come to her. He is trying to protect her from the drunk men and animals that come roaming around at night.
The deathless man takes the jar, Natalia follows him to ask questions about her grandfather.

With the information given, I'm gonna say that it seems like Arlo's death was by the military. Sometimes your friend can be the enemy and you don't even know it. As the old quote goes "keep your friends close and your enemies closer".

I believe that Fra Anton is so protective over the narrator because she is a good person and he knows it. He can see she wants to help and has a good heart, which in turns makes him have trust and respect for her.

Natalia thinks that the deathless man took the jar...
I'm kinda confused on this part. But I would say that she follows him simply because she is curious. I would if I were her!

Arlo was killed by the kids he had been camping with. They were from the other country's, Natalia's country, paramilitary, which played a roll in the awkwardness between Fra Anton and Natalia. Also, Fra Anton and Natalia haven't known eachother very long at all and Natalia didn't know what to say or how to comfort him about his brother's death.

I think Fra Anton is just a caring man who doesn't want a young girl to stay out by a grave completly alone all night. He was protecting her from the wild animals and the people that came around there to drink. However, he did mention superstitions so that leads me to believe he does believe that the mora, or at least something not human comes to collect the coins and visit the site.

I think it's the Deathless man that takes the jar and so does Natalia, which is why she follows him. She wants to talk to him about her now dead grandfather.

Unknown said...

The conclusion i came up with about Arlo's death was that his friends betrayed him. I think his friends trapped Arlo, and killed him. The awkwardness about the conversation was that the boys that killed Arlo were from Natalia's side of the border. Throughout the book, there was always tension about people from separate sides of the borders. I think the narrator generally felt so bad that his brother was killed, and almost felt ashamed that the boys were from her side.

I think Fra Anton is protecting the narrator because it’s in his nature. He is a religious leader and protecting peoples well-being almost seems a given. Even though it is his duty to protect people I think Fra Anton see's Natalia as innocent, and see's that she just wants to do good. I think that he admires Natalia for coming across the border, and lending her services to the children.

I completely believed that the deathless man took the jar. Everything that was described sounded just like the deathless man. I think Natalia followed the man because she wanted her grandfather’s book back. Moreover, I just think she wanted to know if all of her grandfather’s stories were true.

Daniel Peterson said...

Based on the information provided its a likely that Arlo was murdered by his paramilitary "friends", this is awkward because they were from the same area as Natalie, and Fra Anton doesnt want to sound accusing.
Fra Anton is probabaly trying to protect her from the drunks or maybe the person he has been digging up the coins.
A shadowy figure takes the jar, Natalie believes him to be the deathless man.

It's hard to say what could have happened to Arlo, poor kid could have drank to much with his friends as a celabration or a doom prediction of the war, Arlo could have killed himself feeling pitty about the war or previous depression, he could have been kidnapped,or died in his sleep of natural causes. Fra Anton did not say that there was any wounds on the boy so i dont think that he was killed, maybe celabrating with his friends he got alcohol poisioning, you know how kids who have mostly been sheltered sometimes act when they are given some type of freedom, not all but some. the awkwardness comes from Nataila's inabilaity to find the words to say, her grandfather has just died but yet i have yet to hear someone say something to her about it, other than her friend hinting that she knew. How are you supposed to know what to say at a time like this when you are holding in the saddness of a death very close to you. Fra Anton must feel like he has an obligatiion to her with bring the children the medicine, or he might feel that she is a good, kind person who is passionate about her work, most people admire that I know that I do! Fra Anton must think about the drunkards who left the bottles there or the body snacther. I don't know who the man is, but I know why she is following him,the same reason why girls in Jason movies walk three miles into the woods to pee, or why when people in any scart movie walk intoa dark basement, when the lights don't work, and they here screams or creepy noises. She is stupid.

Arlo was most likely killed by his paramilitary "friends." They were out "camping" so he could have been killed for a number of reasons. The conversation gets a little awkward because the boys that Arlo was with were from the same side of the conflict that Natalie is associated with. Also, Natalie was unsure on how to comfort Anton without sounding patronizing.

Fra Anton made it evident that he was protecting Natalie from drunks and animals that roam the night, but perhaps he also has his own superstitious beliefs about the mora. Or perhaps he knows who the alleged "spirit" really is and he's protecting his identity.

The man who takes the jar is thought to be the deathless man, but who knows as of yet?

Unknown said...

The explanation that I can come up with for Arlo's death is that it has something to do with the war, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time when he was out with his friends. The conversation is awkward because the narrator was not at all prepared to learn about Fra Anton's brother, and did not know what to say or do to try and console him.

Fra Anton is so protective of the character because he may look at her like a little sibling and want to keep her safe and away from any danger.

I believe that the deathless man came to take the jar, which would also explain why she follows him. Natalia had many questions for him concerning her grandfather, that she thought he would know.

Elise.G. said...

I believe that Arlo was killed by the Parliamentary from Natalia's side. The awkwardness is because of Natalia's partial guilt because it was her side's fault, and in part because of Fra Anton knowing Natalia would feel this way and not wanting her to.
I think Fra Anton tries protecting her because it's in his nature and because he feels he should, considering the help that Natalia has been trying to lend.
I think the deathless man takes the jar and Natalia follows him because she also has the feeling that it is the deathless man.

Arlo died while he was out fighting in the war. The conversation between Fra Anton and Natalia becomes awkward when Natalia nonchalantly asks Fra Anton why everyone likes this dog so much. Fra Anton instantly begins thinking of his brother and is forced to tell her the story.

I believe Fra Anton is so protective over the narrator because he doesn't want to see another person he likes get hurt. He thinks he is protecting her from having to see the kind of suffering death brings. What he doesn't know, however, is that Natalia is already going through that and much more.

I'm convinced it's Fra Anton who takes the jar. I think Natalia followed him up the hill because she thought it was the deathless man and she had many unanswered questions she was hoping to ask him about her grandfather.

Arlo was out camping with his friends and boys being boys they were probably doing something pretty stupid and i think Arlo died because of it. I think its always awkward when someone tells you about a death because really all you can say is that your sorry amd move on to a different subject. Fra Antum I think was afraid that someone would try and hurt Natalia because she is just alone in the middle of a graveyard at night. Hopefully the deathless man took the jar so she can get some anwsers about her grandfather.

Based on the information in the book, Arlo was killed by the paramilitary from Natalia's country. The awkwardness grew from Natalia wanting to apologize since it was her country's military and Fra Antun's refusal to acknowledge it.

Fra Antun is protective over Natalia because she is in the middle of a vineyard at night and because he does not want to know if there is someone who collects the bodies at the crossroads and if they are dangerous or not.

I want the man who took the jar to be the deathless man. I want Natalia to meet him and ask him about her grandfather. She follows him to find out if it really is the deathless man.

Based on the information I think Arlo was killed because he trusted the wrong people. The kids that Arlo attended camp with ultimately ended up betraying him. Instead of being his friends, some of them were serving the paramilitary. Since I know that some of the kids were serving the paramilitary I am forced to believe that they killed Arlo, because he was an outsider with different opinions that they did not agree with. The awkwardness in the conversation between Natalia and Fra Antun was caused by Natalia’s struggle to find the right words.
I think that Fra Antun is protective over the narrator because he feels that it is his job to protect her. Fra Antun cares about Natalia and realizes that she is there to help the community, and wants to ensure that she is kept safe.
Natalia is convinced that the deathless man took the jar. Since she believes he took the jar she decides to follow him out of curiosity.

Based on the information provided so far I would think Arlo was killed by the paramilitary who acted like they were his friends and then killed him this is awkward because it was Natalia's military that killed Arlo and she doesn't have the slightest idea how to apologize for it.

Fra Anton is so protective of Natalia because he is worried that she will get hurt by animals, drunks, or even a supernatural being that comes for the coins at night, furthermore he could be projecting how much he wanted to protect Arlo on her.

I think the Deathless Man took the jar, Natalia follows the man because she also believes it is the deathless man and she wants answers regarding the death of her grandfather.

Arlo’s death is the result of him trusting people who ended up hurting him. Arlo thought he was going camping with a group of friends, but they turned out to be paramilitary from across the border. It is awkward when Fra Antun is telling this story because he is trying not to make it seem like he is partly blaming Natalia for the death because she is related to the paramilitary he is talking about, and Natalia does not know how to react when she finds out Arlo is dead. When she tries consoling him, she comes off as sounding kind of uninterested, which makes things more uncomfortable.

Fra Antun is protective of Natalia because he feels responsible for her. If anything happens to her while she is in the field, he will carry the blame. Fra Antun seems like a nice person so it could be that he just has genuine concern for her and feels the need to keep her safe.

I don’t know who took the jar, but I hope it is the deathless man. Natalia followed him to see who he was and if he is the deathless man because she has a lot of questions that she hopes he can answer.

Arlo's death sounded very sad and traumatic. He sounds like a man that everyone loved throughout the village. The explanation of how he died is he was tricked into going on a camping trip with some new friends when really it was the Parliamentary that wanted to kill him. The awkwardness in this conversation is that Natalia is expecting Fra Anton to say something about how he was killed by the country she lives in. However, Fra Anton is not bitter and understands that Natalia has no control of her government. Natalia feels like she needs to apologize but she just doesn't know how.

Fra Anton is so protective of Natalia because he cares for her and wants to make sure nothing happens to her. He is protecting her from death. I think it is the deathless man who takes the jar, and she follows him because she has many questions to ask about what happened to her grandfather.

Apart from the fact that the paramilitary that killed Arlo was from Natalia's side of the border, some of the awkwardness comes from her asking Fra Anton about his brother as if he is still alive, to which he has to explain his death. Which is kind of awkward for anyone.
As to who took the jar, I want to say it was the deathless man, but something is telling me it was someone else.

I believe that the kids Arlo went camping with were paramilitary that betrayed and killed him. It is awkward because the paramilitary are from Natalia’s side. Also, Natalia doesn’t know how to respond to Arlo’s death and can’t find the right words to say.

I believe Fra Anton is so protective of Natalia because he is a very kind and caring person. He looks after the children everyday and just developed a kind attitude towards everyone. He claims that he’s protecting her from coyotes, but I believe that he, like Natalia, expects someone to come and take the body.

I believe that it is the deathless man who comes and takes the body. I think Natalia follows him because she knows that he knew her grandfather and she suspects that her grandfather left to seek out the deathless man. She wants to know if the deathless man is real, and, if it is him, she wants to know if he knows anything about her grandfather and why he sought him out.

Arlo's death is thought to be by his friends that he went camping with. Evidence towards that theory is of course the fact that afterword they found out that his friends were paramilitary. The awkwardness in the conversation is mainly the fact that Natalia can't empathize with Fra Anton. She has no idea how to respond to a situation that she has no background experience with.

He is probably really protective of her because she obviously doesn't know the area at all. He was warning her of drunks and superstitious things known to cross paths of the cross roads.

I think that the deathless man might have taken the jar. She probably follows the man because she might be curious that the man is indeed the deathless man.

The awkwardness most likely stems from the fact that the narrator doesn’t know what to say she isn’t sure how to respond which probably makes both of them very uncomfortable. I think Fra Anton is extremely grateful for Natalia and therefore wants to protect her from whatever could be coming. I believe Fra Atun thinks that the deathless man is coming and wants to try to convince Natalia not to stay. The deathless man takes the jar. I feel that Natalia is extremely curious as to what this man does and what he does with the jar.

Arlo was killed while he was camping with some "friends". These friends were from the paramilitary which makes this situation awkward due to the fact that they are from the country Natalia is from. Fra Anton doesn't want to make it sound like he is blaming Natalia for Arlo's death, but it sort of comes out that way.
Fra Anton might be so protective of the narrator because he might see her as his responsibility. Since he couldn't protect Arlo, he might use those feelings on Natalia. He is protecting her from grave robbers and other people from the community.
It is hinted that the deathless man takes the jar, but I feel as if the writer is just attempting to mislead us. But if it is the deathless man, Natalia follows him in order to get answers about the truth of her grandfather and his stories.

I believe that Arlo was killed by the Parliamentary from Natalia’s side. The awkwardness was partially caused by the guilt Natalia feels guilty. The awkwardness was also caused because of Fra Anton knowing how Natalia felt and wanting her not to feel that way.
I think Fra Anton tries protecting her because he just feels like he need to. I think he looks at her like a sister and feels the need to protect her.
I think the deathless man takes the jar and Natalia follows him because she too believed that it was the deathless man and she wanted to talk to him.

I think that Arlos death was caused by his "friends" which were really the enemies. I think this made it slightly awkard when Natalia doesn't know what to say about the situation.

I think Fra Anton is so protective of Natalia because he likes her and knows she is trying to help so he does not want anything bad to happen to her.

Natalia thinks the deathless man takes the jar. I think she might follow him to get answers for the question she might have inside.

I think that Arlo was killed by the people he went camping with. I cannot think of any other more reasonable conclusion as to who would have murdered him. Fra Anton feels guilty about his brother's death, which is why his conversation about it with Natalia is uncomfortable. I think he is so protective over her because he knows that she is a genuinely good person, and he does not want her to get mixed up in a bad situation where she could be hurt or killed, like his brother was. I do not think that it was the deathless man who took the jaralthough I did suspect it at first. Natalia follows the man because she believes he is the deathless man and she wants to talk to him in order to get more information about her grandfather's death.

Originally when I found out Arlo was Fra Anton’s brother, I thought Arlo was killed by a land mine by the vineyard and maybe Arlo’s dog Bis had led the family to his body (or what was left anyway). The awkwardness in the conversation between Natalia and Fra Anton is created, because Natalia’s “people” were the ones responsible for Arlo’s death.
The deathless man takes the jar, and Natalia follows him for her own closure. I think Natalia wants some proof in order to believe her grandfather’s bizarre stories, and by being with the deathless man I think she feels closer to her grandfather one last time.

Arlo dies because when he went camping with the people he thought were his friends, but were actually from the paramilitary and they killed him. I think Fra Anton is protective of the narrator because he cares for her and thinks she is a good person and doesn't want anything to happen to her. I think it was the deathless man who took the jar and she follows him because she wants to know more about her grandfather and if they actually met and what he knows that she may not.

My best guess is that the boys killed Arlo, with them being from different sides of the border. This creates an awkwardness because it is possible Natalia is on the same side that killed Fra Anton's brother.

Fra Anton is being a good host; if I invited people to vaccinate orphans I provided for, I wouldn't willingly let her spend the night in some vineyard to wait and see if someone dug up a grave.

I think that the deathless man may have taken the jar, and that Natalia believes this as well and wants to get some answers about her grandfather.

Arlo's friends were just deadly spies that killed him...

Fra Antun just has that old school protective way of thinking. And he thinks he's protecting her from drunken fools.

Fra Antun father takes the jar.

Arlo was killed by people from Natalia's country who pretended to be his friends. The conversation is awkward between Natalia and Fra Anton because people from Natalia's country killed his brother, and she really doesn't know how to respond, and Fra Anton doesn't want her to feel responsible.
I think Fra Anton is protective of Natalia because he is just a naturally protective person.
I think the deathless man takes the jar, and she follows him in hope of getting some answers about her grandfather.

I think that the deathless man is the one who took the jar and she followed him because she was curious and wanted to get her grandfathers book back.

Fra is being so protective because they are so close she just wants to keep her safe.

I'm not sure why Arlo was such a threat to the paramilitary, but for some reason they faked friendship to gain his trust so they could take him somewhere secluded and kill him without being found out.

Fra Antun knew that the men who killed Arlo came from the same country as Natalia, but he didn't seem to hold her responsible in the slightest. Natalia, however, read into his words too much and felt guilty. Due to that, she didn't know what to say to him, and I think Fra Antun sensed her uncertainty, and the silence became uncomfortable.

It is likely that Arlo died from the so called friends of the paramilitary. He was betrayed by the people he thought he had befriended. The awkwardness of the conversation is from Fra's attitude its very relaxed and almost ominous.

From the information provided I suspect that Arlo was killed by the paramilitary from Natalia's country. Arlo and his friends were most likely mistaken for the enemy and attached. The awkwardness in the conversation was caused by Fra Anton's unwillingness to blame Natalia's people for killing his brother.
Fra Anton in protective of the narrator because he cares about her. He is trying to protect her from drunk men that come to crossroads at night.
I think the deathless man takes the jar and that Natalia follows him to question him about her grandfather.

Andrew Gin said...

From what I can gather, Arlo's death was caused by a paramilitary that befriended, or had at least seemed to befriend Arlo. The conversation becomes awkward when Fra Anton tells Natalia that the paramilitary came from her side.

There could be some other deep, underlying reason (like what happened to Arlo influencing him), but I believe that Fra Anton is simply a kind and smart man who knows that it is risky for a young woman to be out in a field alone at night. The path is regularly traveled by drunk men at night, which only worsens the situation.

The deathless man is the one who takes the jar, or that is at least what can be assumed, based on earlier foreshadowing. Assuming that it is the deathless man, Natalia follows him because she has questions about her grandfather, and honestly, who would not want to meet such an interesting man with wild claims?

Arlo's death was probably caused by the paramiltary, of Natalia's country, who pretended to be Arlo's friends, but killed Arlo on the camping trip they went on.

The conversation between Natalia and Fra Anton is awkward because Fra Anton is telling a very personal story about his brother's death, and all Natalia has to say is "I'm sorry". Natalia's non use of comforting words is what made it awkward.

Fra Anton is just a caring man, which is why is comes off as him being protective of Natalia. It is in his nature to do this, considering he is a religious leader.

I believe that Arlo was killed by paramilitary and the awkwardness of the conversation was caused by the possible guilt Natalia feels because it was her people that may have killed him.

It was probably the Deathless man that took the jar and she followed him to see if it was him and to talk to him.

Arlo’s death was caused by the paramilitary. They befriended him but killed him soon after they discovered he was of the opposing side. It is always awkward when it comes to referring to someone who is deceased. Let’s just say you don’t know how to word it. The story of Bis was depressing.
Fra Anton is so protective of Natalia because he thinks she really helps the town and brings a sense of hope. Since he lost Arlo he wants to keep her safe from death. I think the deathless man took the jar from the crossroads. She follows the man in hopes of word of her grandfather.

I believe Arlo was killed by the people he was travelling with. They killed him for some sort of political gain. The conversation was awkward because there's really nothing to say to someone to sooth them after the death of a loved one. Comforting cliches only go so far.

Fra Anton's protectiveness is, I think, is born out of his guilt. He wasn't able to prevent Arlo's death, so he feels it is his responsibility to protect Natalia. His guilt compels him to care for her.

Josh Ortiz said...

Arlo was more then likely dispatched by the people he kept company with. The motivations behind such a thing must be for some sort of personal gain. The conversation turns akward because you cant really soothe someone when a close relative of their has died. Fra antons protectiveness comes from his own concious he wasnt able to do anything to stop arlos death so he feels responsible to take care of natalia.

Arlo was most likely killed by someone he thought he could trust that turned out to oppose his views. I just can't see this as an accident. The conversation becomes awkward because there is no easy way to console someone in this situation. Natalia seems to have become Fra Anton's replacement sibling, this the protectiveness. I think the deathless man took the jar and will help Natalia.

Based on the information given Arlo was killed by the paramilitary who were pretending to be friends. The conversation became awkward when Natalia realized the paramilitary were from her country. I think Fra Anton is so protective of the narrator because he takes care of everyone. I believe the deathless man took the jar and Natalia followed him to ask him about her grandfather.

I believe Arlo was killed by the "friends" he went camping with. The awkwardness of the conversation can be caused by Natalia not knowing what to say. In the event of the death of someone close to somebody the words "I'm sorry" or other cliche answers are meaningless.
I think the deathless man takes the jar and she follows him in hope of meeting him.

I think Arlo was killed by the company that were pretending to be his friends. The awkwardness between Natalia and Fra Anton is caused by the knowledge that the paramilitary that killed Fra Anton's brother were from Natalia's country. Natalia also doesn't really know how to respond to the situation.
I think Fra Anton is protective of Natalia because he feels responsible for her and wants to keep her safe. He cares for her.
I think the deathless man took the jar, and Natalia thinks the same. She follows him because she still has unanswered questions about her grandfather.

At first I thought she was following the deathless man, but during the dialogue I realized that definitely was not even an option. First, the man talks about his wife, and the deathless man’s wife is dead. The man did ask for water, but he did not drink it as the deathless man would have, he used it to wash his hands, that was just put in there to lead the reader on and trick people. Second, he talks about his son’s grave, the deathless man never mentioned anything about a son. The narrator asks about another son, who might know, and the man says he probably suspects something. None of this fits the deathless man, but it does fit, Barba Ivan. He has all of the motivation too. First, we recently learned of his other son who died, the one who owned the dog and was killed by people from the other state and how his wife took it hard. In the dialogue Barba Ivan talks of how his wife has hope when she finds the things are gone that he leaves on the grave. And third is his son that is still living, and how he does not know it is his dad doing it, but knows it is somebody. He then takes all of the things from the grave because he is a generous man who cares about the feelings and superstitions of others. As shown earlier when he allows the family to dig in his yard and give them a home in the meantime. Last, the deathless man wouldn’t be in that place because the man is already dead, so he would have no reason to be there. At first, I thought as well as the narrator that it is the deathless man who she was following, but in the end it was clear that it is Barba Ivan.

Almost didn't want to ruin the numbers of comments... but I degrees.

I feel like Arlo was killed by his friends, who, surprise surprise, ended up not being his friends. Basically, it's awkward between Fra and Natalia because Fra's brother was from Natalia's country.. where he sort of died.

WHO STOLE THE COOKIES FROM THE COOKIE JAR?! Was it me..? COULDN'T BE! Not you? THEN WHO?!?!?

Probably the Deathless man.
