Why does Claude see it as a disaster that Edgar is saving all the records from being destroyed? Later, Claude thinks it will be a help that they have the files...but why does he see it as a tragedy at this point?
Why has Claude kept the bottle's contents around? Why doesn't this make sense?
Why does Claude start helping Edgar with the files?

Claude thinks it's a bad thing that Edgar is saving the files because Claude had hidden the bottle in the bottom of the file cabinet. Claude keeps the bottle because he's afraid of it being traced back to him, and he doesn't want the bottle destroyed because it gives him confidence. This doesn't make sense because he also says that the bottle is part of him, but the very worst part. Claude starts helping Edgar with the files in the hopes that he'll uncover the bottle before Edgar does.
Claude knows that if Edgar ventures into the barn's attic to save the older files that he will find the poison bottle he used to kill Gar. He knows that Edgar is already suspicious of him, but if Edgar finds the bottle with its deadly contents, he will be able to prove to his mother that Claude was engaged in something nefarious. Therefore, he volunteers to help Edgar save the files in order to insure that he will be a victim to the fire and be unable to prove Claude's guilt.
On a side note, it was likely that Claude kept the bottle around as a backup plan for Edgar's return; if he determines that Edgar knows too much, he can always poison him without Trudy getting too suspicious.
