This is a guide for my AP English Literature students to help them make sense of the literature we encounter, and I will include some cool stuff that will lead others to love and admire a variety of authors and their works.
Does Edgar believe what he saw was real when he wakes up?
Why does he throw the syringe into the silo?
Why is Edgar in the tree? What does he hope to see?
We shift to Claude's point of view...Why is he so shaken by Edgar's watching?
Why does Edgar smile back at Claude?

Edgar is in a tree because he hopes to spy on his mother and Claude. After what he had found out the night before, he wants to see if anything will happen. He doesn't want his mom and Claude to get married, he doesn't want her to accept the proposal. He wants to see if they will kiss or maybe if Claude will propose again. I think Edgar smiles back at Claude to show him that he knows something isn't right, to try and intimidate him. So Claude knows everything and that Edgar saw what had just happened.
When he wakes up, Edgar seems to believe that what he saw the night before was real. The broken syringe only enforces this conviction. Edgar throws the syringe in the silo because it’s the weapon that killed his dad. He is tired of playing games and faces his suspicions head-on when he climbs the tree outside the kitchen window. Edgar wants to know for himself what is taking place between Claude and Trudy. Anyone would be shocked to see someone staring through a window, so it’s not especially surprising that Claude is shaken when he sees Edgar spying on them. But after he realizes that it’s only Edgar, he gets tenser instead of relaxing. Claude was trying pretty hard to keep the secret from Edgar, so when Edgar finds out he gets unsettled by it. Edgar is also much like Gar. Perhaps seeing Edgar watching him reminds him of his betrayal to his brother and his family.
Edgar does try to believe what he saw was real. However he throws the syringe because it was corrupting his image because that is what killed his father and he is trying to believe otherwise. Edgar goes in the tree to spy on Trudy and Claude I think he wants to see it for himself-his mother with another man. I think Edgar intimidates Claude, which I can see why. Edgar knows those two have been sneaking around and Claude has tried so hard to keep it a secret.
When Edgar wakes up, he does believe that the dream is real. When he finds the syringe, that reinforces the reality of his dream. He gets rid of the syringe because he is holding the cause of his father's death in his hand and he doesn't want that evil to stay with him. Edgar's suspicions are confirmed when he sees Claude with his mother. Claude is extremely shaken because it is weird to see someone peeping. Also, now Edgar knows his secret so he is scared of what else Edgar is capable of figuring out. I do like the point that Yatri made in saying that it Edgar reminds him of Gar and then it reminds him of the betrayal to his family. I never looked at it that way, I just thought he was shaken because he was caught red-handed.
Edgar believes what he saw was real and is further convinced by the broken syringe. I think that he throws it into the silo to let go of his fathers death and move forward with figuring out what really happened. Edgar says in the novel that he doesn't know why he is in the tree but the reader knows that he is trying to see his mother and Claude.
Edgar believes his dream was real and his broken syringe only confirms his thoughts. Edgar throws the syringe in the silo because he wants to be rid of the thing that caused his fathers death. Edgar is in the tree to spy on his mother and Claude. He smiles at Claude as if to say that he has figured out what he has been hiding.
Edgar is in the tree because he hopes to spy on his mother and Claude. He wants to see what is going on between the two of them. Claude is shaken up by Edgar spying from the tree because it caught him off guard. He knows Edgar knows things that could ruin his relationship with Trudy. Edgar smiles at Claude because he figured out what Claude is up to.
