This is a guide for my AP English Literature students to help them make sense of the literature we encounter, and I will include some cool stuff that will lead others to love and admire a variety of authors and their works.
Claude waits until Edgar is busy putting more files into the wheelbarrow to quickly stab him with the needle. Edgar is so focused that he doesn't realize what has happened and didn't see Claude do it. Edgar thinks he's being overcome by smoke, so he uses the pitchfork to try and clear it. Claude was confused because he thought Edgar had realized that he was stabbed.
Claude acts like he is also busy and can see how focused Edgar is on the files, so he waits until Edgar has his back turned. Then he quickly stabs him in the neck. Edgar doesn't realize that Claude has stabbed him and his main focus is getting the records. He uses the pitchfork to clear the smoke to continue getting the files out.
Edgar didn't notice the needle because of the fire. He was too focused on the burning barn to notice what Claude was doing. Also, Edgar didn't use the pitchfork because he couldn't see what was going on with all the smoke.
Edgar doesn't notice Claude's syringe piercing into his neck because Edgar is too focused on trying to get the records of the dogs out of the barn. Edgar doesn't fight back with the pitchfork because he's using it too clear the smoke so he can see.
Edgar is too focused on the fire to notice Claude stabbing him with the needle. Often times shock or other distractions can make people not notice or feel things. The pitchfork wasn't turned around and used on Claude because it was being used in an attempt to clear the smoke that was obstructing Edgar's vision
