Part IV: Chequamegon: Flight

Source: http://skateandannoy.com
Look closely at the setting in the first section of the chapter. What symbols/symbolism do you see in the setting? What images bring about the symbolism?
Edgar thinks about Almondine while he is making his way through the woods. Why do you think he didn't try to take her with him?Why is it better that he took dogs from his litter? How do the personalities of the three dogs differ? How might these differences help or hinder their travels?
After Glen passes in the cruiser, Edgar releases the dogs, but they stay put. Why? What does that tell you about the dogs?
Why do you think Edgar was dreaming of falling from above the workshop? Is this symbolic of anything?
Edgar seems very intelligent when it comes to survival while being on the lam. How do you think he came to know so much about survival?
Why doesn't Edgar take all of the hot dogs for himself and the dogs?

After Glen passes in the cruiser, Edgar releases the dogs, but they stay put. This could tell us many things about the dogs. I personally believe it shows how loyal they are to Edgar. Edgar has trained them well and always had the dogs’ best interest in mind, I think they could see that Edgar had always been good to them. So in return when the time came they stood by Edgar’s side proving to him that he had dogs that were willing to stay. I think it also shows how much they might have understood. They seemed to know something wasn't right so they did what they were told.

Edgar didn't go back for Almondine because if he tried to get to the house, he would have gotten caught. It may be better that he took the dogs from his litter because they are younger and the traveling won't be as hard on them as it would be on Almondine. Essay's at ease, scouting, acting like a huntress, and going ahead. This could be challenging with her pushing foward faster than the rest, but it hasn't caused problems thus far and seems ok. Tinder is described as being the hardest to pin down, but it sounds like he stays in between Baboo and Essay, so he shouldn't be too hard to keep a track of. Baboo follows stay commands and stays close to Edgar which are both good traits to have for this journey.
I think Edgar was dreaming of falling from the workshop out of remebrance or guilt of causing Doctor Papineau to fall.

Edgar didn't take Almondine because she is very old compared to the dogs from Edgar's litter. Moreover, the relationship between Edgar and Almondine had worsened lately while his relationship with the litter is more personal and he appreciates their loyalty. The dogs personalities might make them clash. For example, Babu who is respected and considered a leader might clash with Essay who doesn't give up. However, their personalities will not hinder their travels as long they are loyal to Edgar.

When Edgar releases his dogs but they stay put in their spots, it proves to Edgar that they want to stay with him. After treating the dogs the way he had, I feel they have a strong connection and can understand that Edgar needs protection now more than ever. I think Edgar didn't take Almondine because their relationship had started to sour after he felt betrayed by her. He also risked being caught in the house if he tried to get her. Edgar's dogs are much younger and have not betrayed him, so they have a stronger relationship.

The setting of the first section of the chapter is in the woods. Being in the woods could symbolize the feelings of being lost or forgotten. Thinking of “The Scarlet Letter,” being in the woods also symbolizes the air of mystery and the act of being secluded from others. However, this is not always a bad thing; you do not have to measure up to others’ expectations.

I think that the reason why Edgar didn't go back to get Almondine is because she was old, and he had no clue what he would encounter out in the woods. He still loved her dearly, but he did not want her to get hurt, or possibly die on the excursion. Edgar took the dogs from his litter with him because they were young, yet well-trained. He spent the most time with them, so they were more used to his instruction based on sign-language.

“Thin remnants of moonlight permeated the woods,” this image could symbolize Edgar’s knowledge of his destination. He has a generalized idea of where he wants to go, but in reality he is just taking it a day at a time, hoping he is heading in the correct direction. Foreshadowing becomes evident when the author states, “… cloaking blackberry canes hidden like saw blades in sheaths.” The following statement foreshadows the danger that lies ahead for Edgar and the dogs.
When Edgar released the dogs after Glen Papineau had passed, they showed their strong sense of natural instincts and loyalty towards Edgar. Fortunately, Edgar, with help from the dogs, realized they were not safe to appear in the open. This event shows Edgar and the reader that the dogs are aware of their duty to protect and guard Edgar throughout the journey.

It's better that Edgar took dogs from his own litter because they are the ones he has worked with the most. The are agile and young, and trained to follow all of his commands. The personalities of the three dogs differ, but they help each other learn and stay safe. For instance, Essay loves to explore and cannot stay put, but the other two dogs work together to keep her down when it is necessary to be quiet. Essay is also the main hunter of the group, and without her, the dogs might not have found the turtle eggs or other food.

Edgar doesn't take all of the hot dogs when he steals because he doesn't want to make it obvious that there was a robbery. By leaving some behind, it will trick the owners by making them think that they had eaten some of the hot dogs and not remembered. He rearranges things into a different order in the house so they can't tell where things have gone missing, and because of this, has managed to not raise any suspicion.

Jessica Maras said...

I believe that Edgar doesn't take all the hot dogs because he doesn't like stealing. He just wants to take enough not to starve. He also doesn't want the owners to find out something is missing and call the cops. If he stole a lot of food, I'm sure the owners would notice. Edgar didn't want to raise any alerts, he wanted to stay down low. If the owners found out someone was stealing their food and told the cops, the cop would probably just so happen to be Glen and he would know it was Edgar. Not many thieves steal food, they normally steal higher priced items. Glen would know that if food was missing, it would most likely be Edgar and his three dogs.

Madison Hanson said...

When Edgar release the dogs and the cruiser is passing the dogs stay because they understand. When Trudy talks about how they can sell their dogs for so much this is one of the reasons. Their dogs can understand what their leader wants from them. The dogs know they are hiding so when they sense the car coming they know Edgar doesn't want to be seen, so they stay which protects Edgar. They show that they're loyal to him and it shows they are very intelligent.
Edgar doesn't take all the hot dogs because he is trying not to be noticed. If he were to take all the food in every cabin the people would notice their things are gone, but if he just takes smaller amounts the people won't notice the food is missing and Edgar and the dogs can stay under the radar.

Ashlie Heller said...

Edgar did the right thing leaving Almondine behind, she is old and probably wouldn't of been able to handle it. Edgar's litter is young and can handle it. He has three dogs with him: Tinder, Essay, and Baboo. Baboo is well behaved and always stayed close to Edgar. Essay and Tinder obey him but tend to get ahead of him. If they get too far ahead Edgar might be found, but the fact that they obey Edgar keeps them safe. The only time they were safe from the dogs not listening was when the police cruiser went by. Edgar gave them the release signal but they stayed because they knew that wasn't safe. When Edgar looked up the car was stopped and Glen was calling Edgar's name. The dogs wanted him to be safe. Also, Edgar knows a lot about survival. He probably learn a lot of stuff when he flips through the dictionary looking for names. His father could of taught him some things too. Even though he is really hungry Edgar decides to leave a pack of hot dog. He might of felt guilty if he took all of them. Plus, it might not seem as obvious that he stole food.

I believe that Edgar thinks about Almondine because he misses her and maybe thinks he should’ve brought her. I think he didn’t bring her because she is growing older and might not be able to keep up with him and the other dogs. I think it is better he took dogs from his litter because they were trained by him and they know how he works and what he expects. I think the dogs stay put after Glen passes by because they know that if dogs come out and Glen sees them, he’ll be able to identify the owner as Edgar and then tell Trudy and Edgar would be found. Edgar doesn’t take all the hot dogs for himself and the dogs because he wants to save some for the next person to be there and not be selfish.

I think Edgar was dreaming of falling from the workshop for a good reason. When one has dreams of falling it is often a subconcious sign that they are losing control of their life. Likewise, Edgar is losing control of his life. He has loist his father. He has lost Doctor Papineau. He has lost the friend he felt towards Almondine. He has lost his house, as he has withdrew to the woods. He has lost the happiness he once held. He has lost control of his life. The falling is not the only symbolic aspect of Edgar's dream though, the workshop is also a symbolic element. The workshop symbolized the value of order and dedication in the Sawtelle family. Therefore, when Edgar falls from the workshop in his dream it is symbolic of how his family has lost order due to undedication in the family (Claude). Overall, the dream is a subconcious verification of the out of control turn the Sawtelle's life has taken.

Edgar's relationship with Almondine has grow more strange with the development of the Liter. Almondine is old and he felt a betrayed by her. While in contrast the liter is comprised of loyal young dogs. Each with their own personalities and has proven to be very loyal to Edgar. When Edgar released the dogs they stayed put. This means that the dogs are loyal to him. Edgar only takes the amount of hot dogs he and the dogs need to get by. He is careful not to be selfish and it will keep so suspicion off of him.

Hannah Phillips said...

Edgar did not take Almondine because he still felt anger toward her from when she was with Claude. Edgar felt betrayed by Almondine. It's better that Edgar brought dogs from his litter because he has a strong bond with his dogs. In his eyes the dogs he has taken with him have not crossed him like Almondine did. These dogs support Edgar completely and these dogs even helped scare Claude. Each dog is different. Essay is adventurous and daring, she often takes off in the weeds and underbrush fearlessly. Baboo is the more cautious one, he listens to all the commands and obeys them right away. Baboo follows Edgar as they trek through the woods. Tinder is the middle of the two, sometimes he takes off and sometimes he does not. Essay could hinder travel because she takes off and does not always come back right away.

BryceDavis said...

When Edgar releases the dogs, they all stay put. This is key because it shows that the young dogs have the highest loyalty to Edgar and they won't leave him in a time of need. This is contrary to Almondine and I believe that this is why Edgar left Almondine behind. He felt betrayed by the dog and did not believe that it had any loyalty toward Edgar. The relationship with the younger dogs had greatly increased since Edgar and Almondine had their falling out and he felt that these dogs were the better pair for him.

Karlyn Manera said...

I am amazed and pleased by the dog’s decisions to stay with Edgar. I am amazed because the dogs are still loyal to Edgar, even after the passing of Gar, changes in their schedule, and the fight. I am pleased for Edgar because it shows his training and all of his hard work in the kennel has paid off. As it is repeated throughout the novel, the dogs are believed to have the ability to make choices. This was a big choice for the dogs and, like I stated before, shows the true loyalty the dogs have.

Jessica Duran said...

Edgar wanted to take Almondine but there was no time to go back for her. Edgar had just killed Dr. Papineau and had to get out of there fast. Almondine is old, I don't think she would have made the journey anyways. As Edgar left, he did have time to get his litter. Only three dogs actually stayed with him: Essay, Baboo, and Tinder. Each their own person. Essay more wild, the huntress. Baboo, the collected one. He always stayed closest to Edgar and listened the best. Then there was Tinder who was in the middle of the other two dogs. He listened but was usually right behind Essay whenever she ran off. Although they all three are different in their own way they balance each other out. They protect each other and Edgar.

Unknown said...

I think the real reason Edgar took three of his dogs instead is because he's both still mad at her for being with Claude instead of him but also because he might have thought how it could hinder them and also harm her. The dogs he choose are so different in personality from one another but they seem to keep each other in check. They stay after Edgar releases them from their stays from seeing glen because they can sense that Edgar is distressed and they feel his emotions and want to help him.

Bailee Wills said...

Edgar didn't take Almondine probably because he knows she's old and may not make it or be able to handle it out in the forest for however long he plans on being away. She had also given up on him recently and he hadn't had the chance to make it up to her yet. She wasn't near him when he ran away. It's better that he took dogs from his litter because they are young and recently trained and are capable of surviving with him. They're strong. He also can have more time with them to continue to train them. Essay is more adventurous and curious while Baboo is very reserved and likes to stay close to Edgar the whole time. Tinder, however, is the middle man. He doesn't stray too far and he sort of looks after Essay. Because Essay likes to run around that could slow the group down as a whole. It may also tire her out faster and could lead to problems later on with their shortage of food and water to sustain her energy level.

Kim Shomo said...

When the cruiser passes as Edgar releases the dogs, they stay put because they have learned to be loyal to Edgar. All the time he put in training the dogs has certainly paid off and this pleases him that they would stay by his side especially at a rough point in his life. He ends up leaving Almondine behind for many reasons. One is because of her own disloyalty to him. She has crossed over and abandoned Edgar to be with Claude rather than staying loyal to Edgar. Another is because of the high risk of possibly getting caught going in to get her and then the amount of stress on her body to make her travel such a long distance at her age.

Edgar didn’t take Almondine with him because she is older and would be more difficult to travel with compared to the pups. Their relationship weakens as his love for the new litter grows because of the hard work and time he spends with them. Even though the dogs’ possess clashing personalities, they are united through their respect and loyalty to Edgar. When glen’s cruiser passes by, Edgar attempts to release the dogs; but despite his efforts, they don’t budge. As a result to the dogs’ proper training and instincts, they didn’t feel right doing so.

I think that Edgar didn't take Almondine with him because she is growing old and he risked being caught if he tried to get her. Another reason he may have left behind Almondine is he could have felt betrayed by her because she went to Claude. When Edgar releases the dogs after Glen passes in the cruiser they stay because it didn't feel right to them. This shows that Edgar's relationship with the dogs has grown since they were pups because of all the time and effort Edgar had given them. When the dogs did stay by Edgar it didn't surprised me, but it helped reinforce the idea that their dogs are one of a kind and they think for themselves.

Kayla Spencer said...

Edgar didn't take Almondine because she went to Claude. If she now will answer to him then she might be able to find Edgar for Claude later on. The dogs that Edgar has raised since they were pups have the feeling of belonging to Edgar, as if he was their protector. That's why I think they stayed with him even after he tried to release them. Where he goes they go. These dogs have a strong mindset, meaning that they can think for themselves. They chose to stay with Edgar by their own doings, he didn't teach them any trick that would make them stay nor did he try to coax them to stay with him. These dogs truly love
Edgar.

Although it was hard for Edgar to leave Almondine behind, I think it was a smart decision for both of them. Almondine is too old for the long travel that Edgar is on. The pups are very loyal to Edgar and have lots of energy.

Edgar dreamed he was falling out of the workshop because he felt guilty for making Doctor Papineau fall. I also think a part of him wishes it was him who had fallen so he wouldn't have to deal with everything going on around him.

Edgar knows so much about survival from living in the country. Growing up he had to be independent because he didn't have an older sibling to help him. He learned his responsibilies at an early age and learned how to care for himself and the dogs.

Edgar didn't take Almondine most likely because he knows that she is growing older and may not be able make it or be able to handle it out in the forest for how long he plans on being away, like the pups would. Even if he wanted to take her, Edgar had just killed Dr. Papineau and was in a rush to get away. Also, Almondie went to Clyde. Edgar felt a betrayed by her. However, the liter is comprised of loyal young dogs.

Edgar decides not to take Almondine with him because she is too old and because he feels that she has betrayed him. After the death of his father, Almondine has warmed up to Claude against Edgar’s wishes. He takes his own litter because they would listen to him, keep him company, and know him better than any of the other dogs.
Edgar doesn’t take all the hot dogs because he doesn’t want the people to realize they are being broken into. He takes just enough so they can survive, but leaves enough so that people do not notice the difference.

Just like in the Hunger Games, Edgar has to learn how to survive and make do with what he has in the wild. This chapter reminded me of Katniss attempting to hunt for food. In this case Edgar has it harder than Katniss. Instead of just trying to find something to eat for one person, he also has to find food for three dogs. Essay the big troublemaker and Baboo is a good listener. However, Tinder is a mix of these two. Edgar knows so much about survival from taking care of the puppies in the kennel. After Glen passes the group and the dogs stay put, the reader can infer that the dogs are very loyal to Edgar. He is a great owner to all of the Sawtelle dogs. Edgar treats them like they are his children!

Ashley Zeiler said...

I think Edgar didn't take Almondine because he knew she wouldn't be okay with running away. He knew she couldn't handle it. The dogs stay put after Glen passes because they know that it's not over yet. This shows that they still know what's best for them and that they still don't fully listen to Edgar. It also shows that they do have a deeper understanding of the their surroundings and they know whats going on.
Edgar dreamed about falling from the stairs because he didn't fully understand what was happening what he killed the doctor, all he heard was the his body falling to the bottom. So maybe he just keeps revisiting the noises and what happened after.

Anna Parrish said...

Though Edgar feels remorse about not taking Almondine with him there are several factors that affected his decision. First off, Edgar still feels a bit betrayed over Almondine getting so cozy with Claude there. Another major factor is that Almondine is getting old, and Edgar finally sees this when the Texan first arrives. Edgar sees that near the adults Almondine looks so frail compared to how he thinks of her that a treck out in the woods may be too hard on her, and as he continues through the woods it's clear that Almondine might not have made it.

Vanessa said...

Edgar decides not to take Almondine with him on his trek through the woods. I think two factors affected his decision. First, their relationship has not been the best in recent times and he still feels betrayed by her since she was laying by Claude's feet. Also, I think even though he is upset with Almondine, he still cares deeply about her and recognizes the fact that she is getting older and doesn't know what to expect in the woods and knows she will be safer at home. Instead, he brings some of the other dogs from his litter as he appreciates their loyalty and since they are young, will have an easier time on the journey.

Natalie Ostas said...

I think Edgar left Almondine behind because he knows she is getting old and all the running and excitement would make her tired and weak, like the dog fight. It's better that he took dogs from his litter because he's been with them from the beginning and they trust each other. Also, they are loyal and will be able to keep up with Edgar because of their young age. Each of the dogs he took are strong, big dogs out of the litter. Each one could benefit Edgar if he would be in the woods for a long time. Essay is the leader, Baboo is the largest, and Tinder likes to fight. These dogs would help Edgar if he encountered a large animal. However, since these dogs are big, it could take a long time before they are hidden.

Unknown said...

I believe that Edgar didn't take all of the hotdogs because it was not necessary. He would only take the food needed to get along, and also this way there would be no suspicion of a robbery. If all the hotdogs would have been taken the police would have been called and one of the first people that would be under suspicion would be Edgar and his dogs being it was only food.

Shiloh Jackson said...

Edgar didn't take Almondine because going back to the house would have been too much of a risk and because the pups were younger, traveling would be easier on them than it would be Almondine.

I believe the dogs staying after Edgar releases them shows loyalty. Edgar took care of them and kept them fed and they knew him. I also think they stayed because they could tell something was going on and wanted to stay with Edgar to help. This again shows their loyalty to him which in his time of need probably meant a great deal.

AdamBlaida said...

Edgar didn't take Almondine because she is an old dog and Edgar knows the trip he is about to go is potentially dangerous. He knows he needs to be stealthy and quick to avoid detection, so taking Almondine would have been a very bad choice. Taking dogs from his own litter was a smart move because these dogs have been trained by Edgar alone since their birth. This means they respect and understand him, which is important when he is on the run.

Edgar chooses not to take all the hot dogs for his posse of dogs in the woods because he is trying to avoid detection. Taking a few hot dogs is something a person would simply ignore, but losing all of your hot dogs is easily noticeable. Edgar's mentality of self-reliance really helps him while on the run, as he seems to be making very well-informed decisions.

Lauren Kuhn said...

I think one reason Edgar didn't take Almondine with him was because it was too late. By the time Edgar was in the woods, it was too late to turn around and get Almondine. If he would've ran back to get her, he could've gotten caught or arrested. Another reason is that Almondine is getting older. Although the book never tells you Edgar's exact age, Almondine has been around since he was baby, and Edgar is at least 10 by this point in the book. If Almondine were to go, it might have been too hard on her and worn her down. It's better that he took the dogs from his litter because they are younger. The dogs from his litter will have more energy and will be able to endure more than Almondine would have, due to her age.

John Apardian said...

One of the reasons Edgar did not go back for Almondine is because he didn't have a lot of time to. Almondine is also an older dog, and probably wouldn't be as helpful compared to his litter. She has been around since Edgar was a baby, and Edgar is at least 12 or 13 now. An old dog like Almondine couldn't handle the stress of the trip. He never made amends with Almondine, but spent part of everyday with his litter, so loyalty also plays a role. When Edgar releases the few dogs left of his litter, they stay. It shows how loyal they are to him. The dogs realize Edgar needs them right now and they won't just abandon him.

Megan Waite said...

After Glenn passes on the cruiser and Edgar releases the dogs, when the dogs decide to stay with Edgar shows how loyal all the pups really are. It also shows the love and respect that the dogs have for him.
Edgar thinks about Almondine while he is making his way through the woods because he somewhat misses her even though everything they've gone through. I think Edgar didn't take her with him because she is such an old dog and could possibly not make the trip. The dogs from the litter are much younger and have lots of energy. I also think that Egdar still feels betrayed by Almondine which is another reason he left her behind.

Hannah Foreman said...

Edgar left Almondine behind because the journey he is going one is a long one and she has grown too old to join him. Edgar takes the puppies from his liter instead, they are very loyal and loving toward him as well. Almondine wasn't loyal to Edgar anymore so taking the puppies was a better choice for him. Edgar's hard work and time put into the liter pays off once he realizes how loving the puppies are toward him.

Brandon Sidoti said...

Edgar probably didn't take Almondine because of their worsening relationship. He appreciates his litters loyalty and he takes them with him instead. His dogs are very loyal to him. He has trained them well and they trust him. Which is what he feels he is missing from Almondine.

I think that Edgar didn't take Almondine with him because he knew she would not have been able to make it in the wild. It is better that Edgar took the dogs from his litter because they are younger. They are stronger than Almondine would have been and better at helping Edgar on his journey through the woods. The dogs all have very different personalities. Essay is adventurous and a bit on the wild side but a great leader of the other two dogs. Tinder is a follower and looks up to Essay and is very intimidated at times. Baboo is very stealth and a good listener. He does as he is told and can concentrate for a long time. All of the dogs personalities help Edgar is different ways. Each dog can do different tasks to help Edgar and themselves survive.

The fdogs already know that something is awry after being in the woods and away from the kennel for awhile. When they see Edgar's reaction to Glen and how he stays them, they know that something is wrong. After he releases them, the stay put because they don't want to risk being seen by anyone. They know that Edgar is freaked out and wants to stay hidden. Even if they don't know or understand why, they still stay and listen to Edgar more closely because they don't want anything bad to happen to him or themselves.

Edgar did not have time to get Almondine. She was in the house when Trudy told Edgar to leave until she saw her standing behind the Silo, so Edgar took his litter. When Glen passes in the cruier, Edgar releases the dogs, but they stay put. This shows that the dogs trust Edgar and that he is a good trainer. When it comes to survival, Edgar is very intelligent. I would guess that Gar taught him survival techniques when he was younger.

Unknown said...

Almondine is an older dog and probably would not do as well in the woods as the younger pups. Also, Edgar did not have a lot of time to go back for Almondine, his mom told him to leave right away. All three of Edgar's dogs are very smart. They trust Edgar and it shows when they stay when Edgar tells them. The pups could have left him any time, but they chose to stay with Edgar. I think Edgar left a package of hotdogs because he does not want the owners of the house to notice, he just wants enough food to survive.

Leanne P. said...

When Edgar releases the dogs after Glen passes and the dogs stay, it shows how truly well trained and loyal they will be on this journey. They have been so well cared for and well trained by Edgar. They know that it's their duty to protect Edgar.

Edgar plays it smart by only taking what he and the dogs need so it's not obvious that things are missing from the house that he robs supplies from.

Samuel Ansara said...

I think Edgar doesn't go back for Almondine because she is old, especially compared to the dogs from his litter. Almondine may not be able to keep up with Edgar and the other dog's and could either slow them down or not make it. I think he brings along the dogs from the litter because they are younger, and more loyal. The personalities of the dogs differ, but I don't think it will cause too much of a problem considering how loyal they are to Edgar.

Unknown said...

I think Edgar did not take Almondine with him not because he was mad at her, but because she was by the house when he ran away. He did not have time to retrieve her without being spotted by Claude and being turned over to the police. It is better he took the dogs from his litter. They are younger, faster, and while out there Edgar can teach them new tricks and review previous commands. Baboo is the calm pup that stays by Edgar's side and follows every command, whether it wants to or not. Essay is the opposite. Essay is the rambunctious one that will follow commands if told a few times. She will run ahead and play in the grass but will come if signaled. Tinder is the middle pup. He can be hyper at times but for the most part he will stay by Edgar. He does what it's told. All three dogs are extremely loyal to Edgar. For example, when he releases them but they stay this shows how loyal they are. They will not leave his side and are obedient.

Abbey Oswald said...

Edgar doesn't bring Almondine along because he feels betrayed, but I think he feels a bit of regret not bringing her along because they have always been together. It wasn't such a bad idea to bring the other dogs along though, they learned a little bit more while they were out there, and they acted quite well when it came to the Glen situation. The three dogs knew enough to stay hidden, because they sensed Edgar did not want to be found, which is a result of good training.

Morgan McCullough said...

The setting in the first section of the chapter describes dark and lonely woods. The saw blades in sheaths gives off a feeling of hidden danger and the pale and narrowing crack in the forest canopy that shows the way better than "earthly things" symbolizes how supernatural it feels to be alone in the dark woods.
Edgar really would have liked to bring Almondine, but he's unsure of their bond now and seems to not trust her as much. It's best that he took the yearlings because they are younger and more lithe and able to react faster because Almondine is getting older. Essay does her own thing, but Tinder and Baboo listen obediently. They are sure to have trouble sticking together.

Ali Baker said...

I think Edgar doesn't bring Almondine along because of a few reasons. In the moment he was sent off into the woods. He took his litter out there and only a few actually stayed. Edgar wasn't thinking about her in the moment and after he was in the woods he realized he had forgotten about her. Also, Almondine is an older dog. The litter is much younger and has more energy than her. I don't think he wanted her to get hurt. Also, he still had a little bit of resentment towards Almondine for being buddy buddy with Claude. Even though he said he would make it up to her that night, he still felt betrayed by her and didn't want to bring her along.

The forest is a symbol of the unknown, mystery, and loneliness. When Edgar entered the forest he had no idea what he would encounter, but he did know that he would keep walking. With people calling out his naming and searching the woods, Edgar took himself and his three pups deeper into the unknown. We find in this chapter that his dogs are very loyal to him and obey all of his commands as they traverse the tough terrain. This loyalty is further affirmed when the dogs do not run towards Glen as he drove by. I think that he didn't take Almondine with him because he didn't know what he would encounter and so he didn't want to take a chance with her being so old.

Edgar didn't take almondine because, she's really old, and the litter has become more loyal. Just like leaving an old friend behind, i'm sure Edgar is hurting for having to leave almondine behind.

I think Edgar did not take Almondine because she is getting older. He might be thinking about how mad she made him or he was regretting not taking her. She may not have made it through the whole trip or she would have slowed them down. The dogs from the litter are young and loyal. They have more energy than Almondine would have had. We see that they are loyal when Edgar lets them go after Glen passes by and they stay by Edgar's side. They are well trained and are close with Edgar.

Edgar didn't take Almondine because he saw how she looked with the other dogs, she paled in comparison. He was also probably still bitter about Almondine taking a liking to Claude. I believe he dreamed about falling in the workshop because he felt somewhat guilty about Doctor Papineau falling.

When Edgar releases the dogs and they stay put, it implies that the dogs want to stay with him. Edgar trained these dogs and was kind and fair to them, so in return, they are loyal to him. I think Edgar chose to take the the dogs from the litter because they are more loyal, and also younger than Almondine. Although Edgar was thinking of Almondine in the woods and missed her, she could have been a burden on his travels.
Edgar only took enough hot dogs to get by on with the dogs so his theft wasn't too noticeable.

the beginning of "Flight" has a lot of symbolism in the description of the setting. "Blackberry canes hidden like saw blades in sheaths." represents how delicate and dangerous Edgar's current situation was; one wrong move and Edgar could be caught, or worse. Many descriptions of shadows and dark and pale surroundings symbolizes the unknown, the mystery of what is to come for Edgar as he steps further and further into the shadows. Edgar took dogs from his litter instead of Almondine because they were younger and much more capable of surviving in the wilderness. The personalities of the dogs differ in respect to the distance they are willing to stay from Edgar and how predictable they are. Essay tends to stay ahead of Edgar; though it may consume more energy, it may come in handy when she's able to warn Edgar of a danger ahead. Baboo follows Edgar's trail and follows his commands stoutly; useful if he needs a dog to follow his commands literally. Finally, Finch, the most unpredictable of the three. Finch travels back and forth and all around the other dogs; this has already proved useful, as Finch was the one to find food for the three dogs.

I feel as if Edgar didn't take Almodine because they didn't have a strong relationship anymore and he was still angry with her. It is better that he took the dogs from the litter because they are younger and have more energy. Another good thing about taking the dogs from the litter instead is that he trained them and have been with them since they were born. The bond he created with them is so stronge that even when he releases the dogs as Glen passes, they stay put because they know that Edgar needs them.

I think he didn't take Almodine because he didn't want her to be a bother and he didn't think she would be able to make it. It does not mean he does not love her. The dogs from his litter are younger and obey him very well. I think the dogs staying put when he released them shows how loyal they are, and that they will always stay by his side.
I believe Edgar knows a lot about survival because he was raised doing things for himself. He is very independent and a hard worker. Edgar is also good with nature and is very smart.

Edgar probably doesn't take Almondine with him because she's old. He also may harbor some bad feelings because of her affection towards Claude. The three dogs are young. They will be able to keep up with Edgar and fend for themselves. Edgar can't take care of an aging dog. It would be cruel to subject Almondine to traveling so much. Even though he's still bitter, he knows leaving her behind, even with Claude, is the best thing for her.
