Driving Lesson

Source: http://www.drive-safely.net
Edgar (and the reader) are supposed to dislike Claude...yet he remains likeable in most of his interactions with Edgar -- like giving him a driving lesson. Why do you think Claude is so nice to Edgar -- even when Trudy isn't around?
Why does Edgar leave Almondine behind?
Why does Edgar become so belligerent, keeping his foot on the gas the whole time?
Claude is patient for nearly the entire ride. How is Edgar like his father, as Claude states?

I think Claude is so nice to Edgar even when Trudy isn't around because he is trying to trick him. If Claude acts like everything is normal, Edgar might start doubting his own accusations and begin to question what he saw and what he found. He might shake off his ideas as crazy and move on. Also, if Claude doesn't do anything to Edgar, Edgar has no argument to back-up how he feels about Claude. By acting super-nice, Edgar will never be able to say that Claude really is a bad person.

Edgar becomes very rebellious during the driving lesson because he doesn't like Claude. He is trying to get that point across without saying (technically, signing) it. At that moment he has Claude's life in his hands because he was driving very recklessly. This control over him makes Edgar feel better about himself and lets out the frustration he was feeling.

By Claude being nice to Edgar, even when Trudy wasn’t around, he wanted Edgar to feel bad about his behavior toward him. He wanted to somewhat brainwash Edgar into thinking that his thoughts toward him were irrational and that he (Claude) was in the right. Or perhaps Claude was acting in that manner so that in the future if he did something dishonest, everyone would be blinded to be on his side and Edgar would be the one to blame. This part of the story kind of made me think of the movie “The Parent Trap,” in which the father’s evil-girlfriend tried to convert everyone to her side even though she was up to no good.

I think that it was symbolic when Edgar kept his foot on the gas the whole time. By doing so, he was showing Claude that he cannot control his life, and that he was going to do what he wanted to do. I also think that it was a form of intimidation for Claude to stay away from his mother.

I think Claude is so nice to Edgar because he knows that Trudy won’t marry him without Edgar liking him. Edgar is also Claude’s nephew, so I think he is trying to do things to make sure Edgar has experiences that usually a dad would give, even if his dad isn’t there to give them. Edgar leaves Almondine behind because it is safer for her to stay home, rather than in a car with a driver that has never driven before. I also wonder if he left her at home to show that one dog doesn’t get special treatment because they usually don’t take the dogs with them. Edgar becomes so belligerent because he is upset that Claude called him son. Edgar feels Claude has no right to call him that because he isn’t his father.

Claude is nice with Edgar most of the time because he wants to improve his image. Edgar doesn't see him very positively. However, Claude is clearly up to no good, why hasn't he been that nice before?

Edgar becomes aggressive in driving because he hated the idea of being the son of Claude and he wanted to make that clear to him. The whole ride really symbolized their relationship. I think the wheel symbolized Edgar, Claude tried to interfere in controlling it but Edgar took all control later. I think the transmission symbolized Claude, he tried to become neutral when he realized Edgar is uncontrollable.

Edgar leaves Almondine behind because he knows what he intends to do on the ride. He loves Almondine, and doesn't want to put her life at risk, so therefore he won't let her ride along. Edgar also despises Claude, and wants to keep as much distance as he can between him and the ones he loves. Edgar intends to use the car to take Claude hostage, and his reckless driving could endanger an animal that is not properly strapped in.

Emily Meyer said...

Claude tries to remain nice to Edgar to gain his trust, knowing that Edgar doesn't like him. Because Claude wishes to marry his mother, it would be incredibly important that Edgar likes him so Trudy will accept the proposal. Edgar leaves Almondine behind most likely because he doesn't want to terrify her in a car that he has never driven before. Knowing that he would probably be reckless he leaves her behind. Edgar becomes belligerent after being called son by Claude. This infuriates Edgar because he doesn't think of Claude as anything near a father figure, so he despises that Claude thought it was alright to call him his son.

Claude just wants Edgar to like him. Edgar's problem is he doesn't like that Claude is trying to replace his father. I think Edgar should give him a chance, because Claude only wants to help Edgar. I think he didn't want Almondine in the car because Claude did, and Edgar wants to defy Claude. I also think Edgar was planning on driving like a mad man so Claude would leave him alone. Edgar did everything the exact opposite of what Claude told him to do. The chapter ends with Claude yelling that Edgar is like his father and driving away. Edgar is like his father though. He doesn't like Claude, he is dedicated to the kennel, he is defiant, and he is the kind of person that shuts everyone away.

Claude tries to be nice to Edgar even when Trudy is not around because he actually wants to be a good person. Claude knows that it is hard for Edgar, losing his dad, and Claude wants to be that fatherly figure for Edgar. Claude knows that if Edgar’s father was still around, he would teach Edgar how to drive. Sometimes Claude gets overwhelmed and cannot handle the way Edgar treats him, which is why he made Edgar walk home after their car ride. Edgar leaves Almondine behind because he does not want her to get hurt while he drives. Edgar is like his father because Edgar fights with Claude just like Edgar’s father used to. No matter how hard Claude tries he cannot get along with Edgar, just like he could not get along with his brother.

Claude is playing good old mind games with Edgar. Claude is being nice to Edgar because he wants him to think poorly on his behavior that he displayed towards Claude. Yes Claude wants Edgar to like him because Claude is trying to marry Edgar's mother, Trudy. When Edgar tries to imitate Fast and Furious in the car with Claude shows him (Claude) that he is not in control of Edgar's life. That he can do whatever he can please with it, that includes endangering Claude's life. Edgar wouldn't let Almondine in the car when he drove because he knew exactly what he was going to do when he got behind that wheel and he would not want to endanger someone that he loves.

I believe that the only reason why Claude is nice to Edgar even when Trudy isn't around is to pretend that he's the good guy and that Edgar is just acting out of control and being angry for no reason. Claude is trying to play off that he's innocent when he's really not. He's trying to make Edgar seem like the bad person in the situation and almost even wants him to feel bad for acting the way that he does. I believe that Claude wants Edgar to accept him so that he doesn't get busted. Claude probably feels that if he gets Edgar on his side, then he doesn't have to worry about anything or going to jail. He's putting in effort with Edgar to save himself from getting into trouble. Although it may seem that Claude is just trying to be nice, he is in fact only being selfish and trying to benefit himself.

Claude is nice to Edgar even when Trudy isn't around because he knows that Edgar knows about his secrets. He has to become likeable to Edgar. He's trying to get Edgar to think he really is the good guy and that there's no reason to mistrust him. If Edgar is on his side then he has an easier time with Trudy and in the kennel. Edgar doesn't bring Alondine because he plans to crash the car and drive crazy with Claude and he doesn't want to hurt her too.

Lauren Kuhn said...

I think Claude is nice to him because Edgar knows what he did and sees him for who he really is. Claude doesn't want Edgar to let his secret out, so he tries to appear likeable to Edgar. If Claude is able to trick Edgar into thinking he's good, Edgar might second guess what his father told him. If Claude was nice to him only when his mother was around, Edgar would know it was an act; hence why he's nice all the time. I believe Edgar leaves Almondine behind because he knows ahead of time that he's going to try to crash the car. He cares about Almondine’s safety and doesn’t want her to get hurt.

The whole reason for Edgar to keep his foot all the way down on the gas petal was not only a metaphor for not being able to control what's happening to him and the things around him but to symbolize that things are changing and he knows Claude's secret and now he's the one in control.

Harrison King said...

Claude is putting on an act to convince Edgar that he is a good guy. Claude has to keep up the appearance even when Trudy isn't around, in order to sell the character he is portraying. Edgar fears for Almondine's safety so he leaves her behind.

Emily Woods said...

Claude gives us a few too many reasons why we should trust him, leaving only the secret Edgar has not yet shared. By taking care of Trudy and being so generous towards Edgar something about this guy just isnt right. This act that Claude is putting on for everyone is just a mask. Claude may be fooling Trudy, but definitely not Edgar. By taking him driving, the anger inside Edgar seems to boil. This is the reason why he keeps his foot on the gas. With no other way to seemingly voice his oppinion. The way Edgar speeds through the back roads doesnt even freak Claude out. It's almost as if Claude new this would be coming. Acting nice and getting under Edgars skin is the game that Claude plays.

emilie easton said...

Claude is out for solely himself; he is selfish. Therefore, he is nice to Edgar for selfish reasons. Claude knows it is in his best interesest if he keeps on Edgar's good side. It is much easier for one to suspect a rude, mean person as a murderer, it is much less common to suspect a kind person of a crime. Claude knows this, he feels he will be less suspected for the murder of Gar if he acts kind-heartedly. This is why Claude plays the Mr.Nice Guy card on Edgar.

Edgar is such a belligerant driver because it is his way of coyly showing his true feelings of Claude. IT is much harder to do good work for a boss or teacher whom one dislikes. This fact is evident is Edgar's driving. His led foot and out of control driving is meant as Edgar's subconcious insult to Claude3. In addition the out of control drive symbolizes how Claude has no control over the situation he has caused, which could prove to be quite dangerous.

Michael Pisanti said...

Claude tries to persuade Edgar into liking him and maybe Edgar will forget about all of the accusations because he sees that Claude is such a nice guy. Edgar won't fall for that trick though because he is steadfast in his campaign to take down Claude. Edgar leaves Almondne behind in case something happens. This time she won't be able to stop Edgar if he wants to do something to Claude. Edgar drives recklessly because it shows his feelings about Claude without saying them. Also, it shows that Edgar is trying to show Claude that he is not is not in control. Claude stays patient though because he is trying to grasp control over Edgar. It is a struggle for power.

I believe that the only reason Claude is being nice to Edgar is because he is trying to trick him. Edgar knows that Claude is not a nice person and does not trust him. Since Claude wants to marry Edgar’s mother, I think he is trying his best to be kind to Edgar. By Claude always being nice to Edgar, even when Trudy isn’t around, Claude is able to say that he has never been unfair or mean to Edgar in anyway. This would make Claude seem like he wants what is best for Edgar. Claude’s actions kind of remind me of a masquerade because he is putting on a mask to hide who he really is.

Edgar becomes so belligerent by keeping his foot on the gas because he wants to show Claude that he is in control. Edgar knows that Claude isn’t who he acts like he is and wants him to realize that he is not fooling anyone. I also think he is doing it to intimidate him. By not letting go of the gas pedal, Edgar is able to take Claude’s life into his own hands. This could scare Claude into realizing that he should not mess with Edgar and should stay away from his mother.

Hannah Phillips said...

I think Claude is nice to Edgar because he wants Edgar to like him. Claude wants to someday own the kennel and marry Trudy so he is nice to Edgar in hopes that Edgar will come around to him and not cause any issues for Claude's plan. I don't think than Claude wants Edgar to like him because Claude wants a relationship with him but because Edgar could mess up Claude's future if Edgar does not like Claude. I think that Claude is nice to Edgar when Trudy is not around so Edgar does not suspect that Claude has alternative models.

Mackenzie Wegener said...

Even thought Claude is nice when Trudy isn’t around, he only does this to fool Edgar. He tricks him into thing he really has changed. Claude wants to marry Trudy and know that they can’t do that if Edgar doesn’t approve, this is Claude’s way of sucking up to him. In the other hand Claude is using a guilt tactic that will make Edgar feel bad for how he has been acting. Claude is a selfish- two faced person, he only looks out for himself and no one else. Edgar leaves Almondine because he cares for her and doesn’t want her to get hurt. The main reason he doesn’t bring her is because he knows he is going to crash the car so he is trying to keep her safe.

John Apardian said...

Claude is only being nice to Edgar because he wants to try and convince him he is a good guy, even though he is not. Learning to drive is something that is usually done with help from the parents; Claude could be trying to fill the father position to make it easier to marry Trudy. She cares too much for her son to marry someone he dislikes so much.

Once Edgar gets behind the wheel, his driving starts to become very dangerous. As the car ride went on Edgar realized that he was in control here. I feel like it started as a warning, like Edgar was trying to say "drop the act and get out of my life", but realized he controlled the fate of his life. He had both his life and Claude's in his hands, maybe willing to risk his life to end Claude's. That is also why he didn't bring Almondine; he was in a situation where he could have injured or killed the people(or animals) with him, and he didn't want to hurt Almondine.

I don’t blame Edgar for disliking Claude. His uncle has caused nothing but frustration ever since he has returned. Edgar has discovered the syringe and the old photo. Edgar has also found Claude kissing his mom. I feel bad for Edgar because Claude is taking his mom away from him in a way. When his father passed away, Edgar and his mom acted like they were dating. The mother-son duo spent every moment together. Now Claude takes away from the time that Edgar cherishes with his mom. I was shocked after Claude offered to give Edgar driving lessons. Usually when Claude was at their home he would just drink and smoke. He doesn’t really care about anyone except himself. Since he could possibly be living in the house with Trudy and Edgar for a very long time, he wants to trick Edgar into liking him. Claude wishes Edgar to believe that he is a good man but on the inside he is truly heartless. I liked the part of this chapter when Almondine was left behind when Claude took Edgar out for the driving lesson. Edgar planned to give Claude the car ride of his life so he knew it would be best for Almondine to be safe at home.

Claude is a very deceitful man. He is trying to trick Edgar into believing that he is not how Edgar originally believed that Claude was. Edgar originally believed that Claude was a bad guy who wasn't good for his family but Claude tries to make it so that Edgar changes his mind and accepts him as a possible replacement for his father. Claude must continue this routine when Trudy isn't around because he doesn't want Edgar to see through his disguise and tell his mother that Claude isn't good for her.

Jack Nachtrab said...

Claude wants Edgar to like him. He realizes the way he treated Edgar's father was wrong and tries to act like everything is okay. Claude wants to be in control but tries to stay calm during the drive to make Edgar like him. Edgar doesn't listen because he doesn't like him and has no respect after seeing the problems Claude caused while staying with them.

Jessica Duran said...

As far as Claude knows, Edgar doesn't like him but that doesn't mean he thinks that Edgar actually believes of him murdering Gar. I think he's being so nice to Edgar to try to put him on his good side. To show him there's nothing to be afraid about. Claude is trying to play Edgar off as crazy and he is always calm. Claude's likable attitude is very convincing. Sometimes I wonder if he actually did kill Gar, but isn't that who Gar told Edgar who killed him? Who else could it be?

Bailee Wills said...

I think Claude is so nice because maybe he wants to have a relationship with Edgar. He could be trying to get on his good side. Earn some brownie points. He could also be attempting to replace Gar!
Edgar leaves Almondine because, in case something bad happens, he doesn't want her to get hurt. He may have decided this was his chance to hurt Claude.
Edgar may be like his father because Edgar was calm the whole time. He also didn't listen to Claude and was very stubborn.

Claude is very good at playing the “nice” and “innocent” card around Edgar even when Trudy isn’t there. I think he is doing his best to have Edgar like him so that Trudy will eventually marry him. However, I don’t think Edgar is buying any of Claude’s actions. When Edgar and Claude are in the car Edgar keeps his foot on the gas for a while, I think he is doing this to scare Claude-inform him that he doesn’t forgive him for killing his father.

Kim Shomo said...

The reason Claude keeps the nice act up with Edgar even though Trudy isn't around is because he still wants Edgar to believe he really is nice. Even though Edgar already doesn't like him, he still tries to convey himself as the nice guy. If Edgar doesn't have any valid reasons to dislike him, he can't. In order to push Claude to his limits, Edgar acts belligerent and refuses to take his foot off the gas. This annoys Claude, but it never really gets the true reaction he was going for out of him. He also left Almondine behind because he knew he was going to drive recklessly and didn't want to endanger her at all.

Jenna Felkey said...

I think that Claude is trying to be nice to Edgar to make sure that Edgar doesn’t find out that Claude killed his father. Even though Edgar already knows this when he found the evidence, Claude is trying to make it seem like Edgar’s behavior is rude and immature. He wants to make sure that Trudy doesn’t find out that Edgar’s coldness towards Claude is because of the fact that he was the one who killed his father. When Edgar doesn’t let off the gas he is trying to show that he is in control and that he should be in charge of the household. He has the intention of crashing the car, which is why he also left Almondine behind.

Nick Hoskins said...

Claude is acting nice to Edgar because he is trying to trick Edgar into thinking that he made a false accusation against Claude. Perhaps Edgar left Almondine behind because he didn't want her to get hurt. By keeping his foot on the gas the whole time, I think Edgar was trying to scare Claude and let him know that Edgar doesn't like him and probably never will.

Dominic P said...

Claude wants to stay on Edgar's good side because he likes Trudy. Without Edgar's approval, Trudy won't like Claude back. Claude is also Edgar's uncle, so maybe he is just trying to be a good uncle. Edgar left Almodine behind because he didn't want her to get hurt. If he decided to take advantage of the driving lesson and injure or even kill Claude, he thought it'd be best to leave Almodine out of it.

Hayley Lajiness said...

Edgar leaves Almondine behind because he’s going to mess with Claude in a casual, crude way while driving. He doesn’t really know what’s going to happen, so he has her stay behind just in case anything dangerous happens.

Edgar keeps his foot on the gas the whole time to silently and passively make a point to Claude, whether Claude understands the point or not is unsure. Edgar directly “tells” Claude the things that are bothering him, but since Claude can’t understand his signing, he gets frustrated and angry and doesn’t know what’s going on. Edgar is angry and wants to inertly tell Claude that he knows what he did without actually telling him that he knows.

Claude is sneaky. He’s trying to be kind and likable to Edgar when Trudy isn’t around because he wants to trick Edgar. Claude is more interested in marring Trudy but he knows that if Edgar voices, he would actually have to sign because he can’t talk, his opinion then Trudy will take his feelings into consideration and then not marry Claude.

Edgar leaves Almondine behind because he knows what he intends to do on the ride. He loves Almondine, and doesn't want to put her life at risk, but he is thinking of injuring Claude, so in order to keep Almondine safe he leaves her behind.

Clause is nice to Edgar because he knows he has to gain Edgar's trust to get to Trudy's heart. Trudy and Edgar are very close, and Claude is trying to become a part of that closeness by attempting to confide in Edgar. Claude ultimately just wants to marry Trudy; Edgar though knows he is a bad man and might have something to do with his father's death.
Edgar leaves Almomdine behind because he doesn't want her to get hurt. Edgar thinks he might start something with Claude. Knowing that Almondine would protect him if a fight broke out, he leaves her home to ensure no injuries will come to her no matter what happens with Claude.

Claude is being nice to Edgar in order to stay on good terms with Trudy. He's nice to Edgar even when Trudy isn't around most likely so they will not suspect that he has any ulterior motives or so even if Edgar tries to say something that doesn't agree with him, people will side with him rather than Edgar. Edgar shows Claude that he is not the boss of him and cannot determine what happens in his life when he keeps his foot on the gas pedal the whole time. Since he deeply cares for Almondine, Edgar probably figured it would be best for her to stay home when he went driving with Claude.

Edgar left Almondine behind for the driving lesson because he wants her to be safe and he didn't know how reckless he was going to be. He kept his foot on the gas pedal to show Claude that he was in control and would go to any means to prove it. I also think he was trying to intimidate Claude. Edgar is like his father because he is very stubborn and picks fights with Claude even though neither of them really knows what they're fighting about.

Edgar keeps his foot on the gas because he's trying to intimidate Claude and show him who's boss. Edgar's like his dad in that way, that he needs to be the one in charge and he's going to be stubborn until Claude gives in.

Claude is being nice and patient with Edgar because he wants to remain on good terms with Trudy and because he knows that Edgar is figuring things out quickly. Claude wants to deceive Edgar into thinking that he is trying to help him and Trudy with the kennel. Edgar's rebellious side really starts to show in this chapter when he keeps pressing the gas down during the driving lesson. Claude remains patient with Edgar even though Edgar is not listening to him. Edgar is also saying extremely harsh things to Claude via sign language which Claude cannot understand.

Despite Edgar’s suspicions about the role of Claude in his father’s death, Claude continues to show an extreme amount of kindness towards Edgar. If Claude truly was the murderer, this could possibly be an attempt to make Edgar doubt that Claude was ever guilty. Also, if Claude ever acted aggressively towards Edgar, Edgar would now have an honest case against Claude. This story could then be delivered to Trudy, which could have caused her to force Claude out. Despite her new relationship with Claude, Edgar still seems to be Trudy’s highest emotional priority.

When Edgar begins to behave belligerently in the car, I feel that Edgar trying to show his own power against Claude. Edgar wants to make it clear that Claude will never be able to replace his father, and that Edgar will not fall for Claude’s schemes. Also, Edgar may have simply been looking to get a reaction out of Claude in order to fortify his suspicions again.

Edgar left Almondine home to keep her safe. He defies everything Claude tells him to do and does the complete opposite. I think that Claude is nice to Edgar because of Trudy. Claude knows Trudy will never agree to his marriage proposal if Edgar despises him. It is just an act that Claude has going. He does not actually care about Edgar liking him. Would it be easier if Edgar liked Claude? Yes, but as long Edgar tolerates him Claude is happy. Also, I think Claude knows Edgar suspects him of something and is trying to shake those feelings from Edgar. Then there is the angel of Claude doing it to provoke Edgar. Nothing makes someone more mad than when someone their already angry at acts nice to them. There are many reasons to Claude's actions, but which one is right?

Edgar knew from the start there was something off about Claude. He was always sticking to himself and any time he'd be near Gar they'd start an argument. Then when Trudy would step in things would calm down. Now, his father is gone. evidence and instinct (well his father appearing after is death) make him believe Claude is the reason behind the death, To top it all off Claude is making moves on Trudy. From a tree Edgar sees them kiss sending even more anger through him. He wants nothing to do with Claude. I believe Claude is being so nice to Edgar because he wants to be on his good side. He wants things to ease up and the tension to go away. He doesn't want Edgar to keep snooping around to find out his secrets. He wants to earn his trust so when things do go wrong he can act like the good guy.

Claude is so nice to Edgar because Claude wants to improve his rough image of his past. Once Claude clears his harsh image he will be able to continue his relationship with Trudy, but only if he has Edgar's full trust. If Claude befriends Edgar then it will make things much easier for Trudy in accepting Claude's proposal. Knowing that Edgar approves of the new relationship would ease tension for Trudy and Claude.

Edgar left Almondine at home because he wanted to see if he could start an argument with or provoke a bad behavior in Claude. Knowing that something could happen led Edgar to leave Almondine behind so she wouldn't get hurt.

Claude is trying to be the good guy. He wants to be on Edgar's good side. It also seems he's trying to take the place of Edgar's father. I think Edgar has the same thoughts because when Claude uses the word son towards him in the sentence and tries to teach him to drive, it angers Edgar. You can sense he is angry and that something might happen when he has Almondine stay behind. He does this because he knows he's going to do something wrong and he doesn't want Almondine hurt in the process.

Ashley Franklin said...

Claude is teaching Edgar to drive and at first Edgar seems to be OK with it. In reality he wasn't. That didn't show until Claude used the word "son" and said, " right here's something Gar would never have done", " He'd have kept you pinned down as long as he could."(288) Edgar says there had been ringing in his ears since he had heard him call him son and after he finally snapped. As they are going for their drive Edgar becomes reckless and belligerent. He won't let his foot up off the gas. I think he does this to get a reaction out of Claude. So far Claude has been in control and now Edgar wants it. He does this by trying to get a reaction out of him. He doesn't care what happens to them he just knows he doesn't like Claude and he wants him gone. Finally, when they stop the car Edgar gets out. Claude then tells him he is just like his father. I think he is like his father in the way he acts. He is stubborn and wants to be in control of whats going on. Just as before how Gar got into the fight with Claude causing him to leave, Edgar is trying to do the same thing. he won't let him gt into his life.

If the reader didn't know any backstory on Claude, and was simply dropped into this chapter, Claude would be a remarkably likable character. He is fun, patient, and kind to Edgar. However, because of what the reader does know about Claude, all of the niceness is very uneasy, and feels fake. It feels this way because the reader knows Claude is trying to woo Edgar to his side, essentially stealing Gar's life. Claude already has the farm, the dogs, and the wife, and all he is missing from his perfect life is the kid, Edgar. Despite his best efforts, Edgar seems to see right through the ruse.

Edgar chooses to leave Almondine behind when he goes out for the car ride because he knows he may do something he will regret. He goes into the car for the first time with a hot head and filled with rage, and doesn't want Almondine caught in the middle of it. This also shows that crashing the car was on Edgar's mind before he even started moving.

I think Claude is so nice to Edgar because Claude wants to eventually marry his mother, Trudy. Claude's hope is by being so nice to Edgar he will learn to trust him, making Trudy more willing to marry him. Edgar, however, does not wish to play Claude's game. Edgar thinks Claude is trying to replace his father and take his mother from him, which makes Edgar furious. I, for one, do not like Claude. He seems sneaky and unreliable to me. Not a trustworthy person to let around your child, let alone marry.
Edgar leaves Almondine behind because he plans on driving recklessly. He knows he will be putting his life in danger and does not wish to put his lifetime companion, Almondine, in danger as well. If I was Claude I would have been a little concerned when Edgar told Almondine to get out of the car. Edgar goes practically everywhere with Almondine and the only reason he wouldn't want her there is because he is planning to do something foolish and reckless that would endanger her well-being.

I Think Claude is nice to Edgar so his nephew will give him permission to marry his mother. Claude tries to butter Edgar up by taking him out driving, seeming like the nice, friendly uncle doing Edgar a favor. Edgar makes Almondine stay behind because he is planning on driving reckless to show Claude he has the upperhand and he does not want Almondine there. That should have been a clue for Claude, because Edgar and Almondine are practically attatched at the hip. When Claude states that Edgar is like his father, he is saying that he is stubborn and has to have things his way.

I believe that Claude is nice to Edgar even when Trudy isn't around to make Edgar seem irrationally opposed to him. Claude takes Edgar to practice his driving so that Edgar will start to like him. Edgar does not fall for Claude's plot and keeps his foot on the gas pedal. Edgar leaves Almondine behind because he does not want her to be in danger by his reckless driving.

Edgar leaves Almondine at home because he knows he will be driving aggressively. He probably would have taken Almondine with him if his dad were with him instead of Claude. But Edgar leaves her at home because he loves her and doesn't want her to get hurt.

From the beginning of the book I never liked Claude. I knew that something was off about him. I think that Claude is nbice to Edgar even when Trudy is around because at first he wants Edgar to like him and accept him because he wants to ber with Trudy. Also, I think that Claude doesn't want him to have any idea that he killed his father. He wants to be really nice and look like a great guy so no one suspects it from him, especially Edgar.

Claude's attempts to trick Edgar into liking him is Claude's way of trying to protect himself against Edgar's suspicions of his father's death. Claude is trying to inject himself into Edgar's life as being a near replacement father. By having control of the farm, Trudy, and the dogs everything that was a memory of Gar is now Claude's.
Edgar keeps his foot on the gas medal to show Claude that he is defiant towards him and will not fall for his deceptions. All Edgar thinks about is not allowing Claude to become his " new father".

Claude is being so nice to Edgar because he's trying to get all "buddy-buddy" and close to Edgar in hopes that he won't suspect Claude of having any bad intentions. And he knows that marrying Trudy wont be likely if Edgar totally dislikes Claude.

Driving like a crazy man was probably a way for Edgar to release frustration and anger. Maybe it was a way of showing Claude that he needs to back off, kinda of like a little warning.

There are many reasons Claude could be acting nice to Edgar. Assuming Edgar is ignorant of his role in Gar's death, he could be giving Edgar driving lessons for Edgar to warm up to and eventually come to like him. Claude could also display kindness to Edgar just to get Trudy to appreciate and trust him more; without Edgar's complaining, Trudy and Claude's relationship could advance unhindered. If Edgar does know about the murder, however, Claude's intentions become a little darker. The driving lessons could be a method for Claude to give Edgar another chance to give up his foolish investigation and start showing him respect, or a way to display Claude's lack of intimidation. Maybe, on the contrary, Claude is being nice to Edgar to feign innocence. At any rate, none of it worked; Edgar was the one to make an impression.

I think Claude is always so nice to Edgar to mess with his head. Claude most likely can tell that Edgar is onto him a little bit, so he is trying to throw him off. If he portrays a fatherly figure, it might get Edgar off of his trail. I think the reason why Edgar left Almondine behind was it didn't feel right if his dad wasn't in the car with them. Edgar probably kept his foot on the gas petal thew whole time to tick Claude off. Claude states that Edgar is like his father because it seems to Claude that Edgar is just against him for some reason.

I think Claude is nice to Edgar even when Trudy isn't around is so he can get on Edgar's good side. He wants Edgar to think that he is a good person and he is scared of Edgar and what he knows about Claude. He wants Edgar to like him because he knows Edgar is aware of what happened. I think Edgar doesn't bring Almondine in the car with him because ahead of time he is planning to drive recklessly and try to crash the car. He doesn't want to bring Almondine in harms way so he is protecting her by not brining her.

I believe Claude is so nice to Edgar because he wants to appear like a good guy. He already knows Edgar does not like him, so he does not want to give him any other reasons to, in fact, he is trying to change Edgar's opinion. Edgar knows he is just trying to trick him though.
Edgar kept his foot on the pedal the whole time to prove a point. He wants Claude to know that he does not like him and that he is up to tricks. His acts in the car let Claude know this in a way without actually having to tell him. I believe he left Almondine home just in case anything happened. Edgar is like his father because he is stubborn, and Claude knows this.

I think Claude is so kind to Edgar because he wants Edgar to look up to him and see him as sort of a fatherly figure. Claude also knows that if he doesn't win Edgar over he has no chance with Trudy.
Edgar doesn't bring Almondine along because he knows that the drive he is about to take is going to be a reckless one, and he doesn't want to risk her getting hurt.

Edgar leaves Almondine behind because he doesn't want to freak her out. I also think he might want to hide his menace at Claude from her at this point as well.
Claude says that Edgar is like his father because of his recklessness. Claude is trying to bribe Edgar into thinking he's the cooler one anyways, but he's finding that the task will be difficult because Edgar is as hard-headed as his father.

Claude is so nice to Edgar because he needs to gain his trust and respect in order to get to Trudy. Edgar is observant and Claude knows to always be on his best behavior so that Edgar won't have a reason to not like him. Edgar left Almondine behind for the driving lesson to keep her from being harmed by an accident.

Claude is nice to Edgar because he wants Edgar to like him, and get on his good side. If Edgar doesn't like him, or trust him, it could screw up his future with Trudy. If he plans on taking over the kennel and marrying Trudy, then he knows he has to be nice to Edgar whether Trudy is around or not.
Edgar left Almondine behind because he wanted to keep her safe, and was afraid that something might happen to her.
Edgar keeps his foot on the gas the whole time to see if he can frustrate and push Claude far enough to break the whole "nice guy" act.

I think Claude is nice to Edgar because he is trying to get Edgar to trust him enough that Edgar will put his gaurd down. Claude is trying to "win Edgar over" by trying to do things with him that he thought Gar may have done with him. If Claude's plan is to marry Trudy, he knows he will have to get Edgar to like him, or at least not have a problem with Claude.

Claude is trying to win over Edgar's support. By having a fatherly image and doing bonding activities he believes he can succeed in winning him over. He is doing this because he is attempting to have some sort of relationship with Trudy, and winning over Edgar would make this process be less painful while also leaving a positive impression on Trudy. I'm stunned that Claude would try this; I highly doubt Gar would want this, despite what he told Trudy. Gar wanted Trudy to immediately re-marry as soon as she found someone that made her happy; however, if Trudy likes Claude then this brings up the same issue that was in the last book. A few people might agree to another form of this (Levirate marriage), so that if they happened to parish so their loved one would still be protected. Gar was not that religious though and I still do not think he would approve. Edgar leaves Almondine because he knows what his future actions would do to her and he doesn't want her to experience those actions. He is trying to keep her safe and avoid any future problems. Edgar became so belligerent because he was expressing some form of rebellion. Claude gave him a bonding opportunity and he turned it completely around so Claude would not want to attempt that again, while at the same time having some fun.

Edgar leaves Almondine behind so she doesn't get hurt. It's obvious Edgar's going to do something to hurt Claude. If something were to happen to Almondine because of that, Edgar would never forgive himself. Edgar's hate is getting between him and Almondine. As Edgar becomes more spiteful and reckless, he drives away everyone close to him.
