Outside Lute

Source: http://images.fineartamerica.com
Why is Edgar so careful to make it look like he didn't steal anything from the cottages and the house? Why does it matter?
Why doesn't Edgar think more about his options before he goes back to the house? Why does he risk getting caught without giving that any thought?
Situation: You hear something on your porch. You turn the light on and go to the door to investigate. There you see a boy with blood all over him and three large dogs. What do you do? What does this man do that is surprising in this situation? What doesn't he do that is surprising?

Edgar makes sure to take rations of the food he steals so that it isn’t noticeable he was there. If the owners, of the various cabins, notice they were robbed, Edgar would have been at risk of being tracked down by the cops. He can continue traveling and providing food for the dogs as long as he takes precautions.
If I walked to my front door to find a young boy and his three dogs I would probably get the boy something to help his injury and eventually see if I can learn any information about him. Henry, on the other hand, was very calm and never called any officials to come and pick up Edgar. Surprisingly, Henry came across as very nervous, but I think he was intrigued by the whole situation. He kept his distance from the dogs but was willing to get Edgar anything he needed.
I am relieved that Edgar was forced to stop for help. Edgar remains to act very independent, but I was afraid he wouldn’t last much longer on his own.

Edgar is careful to not take too much because he doesn't want to leave a trail. His disappearance was very publicized and he even found flyers with his picture in some of the cabins. If one person noticed that they got robbed, not only would cops come out to investigate but they would eventually piece together the fact that the cabins were being robbed in a pattern that headed north. They would make the connection to Edgar and focus less on the missing food and more on him. I think when Tinder gets injured, Edgar stops worrying about getting caught because he loves his dogs so much. It shows that he would be willing to give up this whole journey just to make sure his dog gets the treatment he needs.

If I were to be in the same situation as Henry I would be scared at first but try to help them out and worry about what the problem was later. It is surprising how calm and unsuspicious Henry is about this occuring. He doesn't call the cops or even ask many questions. I think it is because later he talks about his ex-girlfriend thinking he was too 'ordinary'. To him, having a boy show up at his porch is not ordinary at all and he feels like he is beginning to live an adventure.

Edgar doesn't think about any options before going back to the house because his is only thought is helping Tinder get help. He knows that he doesn't have antiseptic or bandages, and he knows that Tinder will have an infection if he doesn't seek help. Tinder will also not be able to walk on his paw for at least a few months, and Edgar knows that they could go hungry from lack of travel with Tinder's injury. Because of all of the factors, Edgar decides that he must go back to Henry's house or risk being caught and losing a dog.

Edgar probably doesn't want to leave houses looking like he stole things from them because he doesn't want anyone to call the police. If the police were called, they would know where Edgar has been and could search the area. Also of many reports were filed, the police may be able to see how far he's going, a generally path he is moving in, or other patterns to find him.
Edgar probably realized how bad Tinder's injury and his injury were so he figured there was no other option. Tinder couldn't really walk so venturing on would be too slow. He was also probably concerned about how their injuries would heal in the woods.(In the later chapters, Tinder's injury draws concern). These reasons are also probably why he risks getting caught; they have no other choice.
I would want to help the boy and his dogs, though I may be nervous that he may be dangerous. I don't think the man did anything that weird. Offering Edgar the pills is something I may not have done, but not too terribly odd. His over all help, action when he finds out Edgar can't talk, and questions are understandable.

If I saw a boy on my porch covered in blood, I would be scared at first until I realized that he was just a kid and that he wasn't dangerous. What Henry does that is surprising is so willingly let him come in and stay there for the night or even a few nights. He even gives him pills to take for the pain. I don't think I would feel comfortable with a boy I just met covered in blood spending the night in my house. What he doesn't do that is surprising is call the police. If you see someone bloody, you would probably call 911 just to make sure he's okay. Especially if you see that it's just a boy with three dogs. Most people would just call the police and let the person stay outside until help came, because they wouldn't trust them. Henry trusted Edgar and that was surprising.

It seems like everyone is on the lookout for Edgar after what happened. As he wonders through the woods, he eventually grows hungry and needs to find food for him and the dogs. As he goes into homes and takes food in small amounts, he is actually thinking in terms of his secrecy. If people start catching on to whoever is stealing his cover could be blown and the police could potentially discover where his whereabouts are. Edgar is keeping in mind that he needs to be smart with the amount of food he takes, considering him and the dogs need to stay hidden from the police.

SeyersMarilyn said...

You are in the woods with only your pups and you steal from someone's house to feed yourself and your dogs. You don't want the owners to know anyone was there because you don't want to be found. Edgar wants to stay hidden and he doesn't want to risk it. He already saw his face on the flyers so if the owners noticed they were robbed, the police would know it was him and he would be tracked down.

I walk outside and see a bloody boy and three large dogs. My first reaction would probably be to call the cops because even though he is a child, the kid could be rabid or his dogs and they could attack. But I would realize he is fine, I would help the poor kid out by giving him food, a shower, and feeding his dogs. Being the curious person I am, I would ask why he was out alone and what he was doing with three dogs. I also try my best to be calm, but unlike Henry, I would definitely call the police. I would feel guilty that a little boy is running wild and if he ended up dead in a river, it would be on me.

Edgar wants to avoid stealing too much so it is harder to find him. Edgar's stealing reminds me of Oskar's lies in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. Both of them are doing wrong things out of necessity. Both are conscious about what they are doing. Oskar used to count the lies, while Edgar keeps his stealing to a minimum. I don't think that Edgar had any other options than going back to the house. At that moment, he cares more about the dog than getting caught. I think I would do the same if I was in the shoes of the man who helped Edgar and the dogs. I think it would be clear that Edgar needs help rather than being a murderer.

Unknown said...

Edgar is so careful not to draw attention to what he is doing because he doesn't want to be found, if a group of people where to start reporting that things had gone missing they would start posting look outs and police officers doing more patrols in that area which could lead Edgar to be recognized.

Michael Pisanti said...

Edgar is wise in only taking small rations of food from each place. If the residents don't realize anything is missing, then they won't call the cops. Without calling the cops, there is no lead on Edgar which keeps him safe. Edgar's love for his dogs shadows over his hope to be safe so he goes back to get help for Tinder. If I was Henry I would have been terrified. It looks like Edgar is a murderer who uses his dogs to kill people then he eats them because his appearance shows blood all over his body. Henry is unsuspicious and helps Edgar because he is just a boy. He also talks about his old ex and how she left him because he was too ordinary. Ordinary people don't take in a blood covered kid and three dogs into their home without asking many questions, so he believes he is starting a new adventure in his life.

Harrison King said...

Edgar makes certain not to steal much from the cottages so that his presence won't be noticed. He is taking small amounts for himself and the dogs. Which isn't so bad, he will be laying low. I think he cares more about getting help for Tinder than getting caught, so much so that it doesn't occur to him the risk of getting caught.

Edgar is careful to make it look like nothing has been stolen when he breaks into people’s houses because he does not want the police to catch him. If the owner of the home finds out there has been a robbery they will most likely call the police. If there is only food stolen they will probably relate the crime to a runaway. If they realize that there is dog food missing, they will most likely know that the runaway is Edgar and will be able to update his location, which will make it easier for them to find him. If I found Edgar on my porch one night, my first reaction would be to scream. I would go tell my parents and let them decide if we should let him in our house or not. Also, I would call the police, which is why it is surprising Henry does not call the police. It is also surprising that Henry lets Edgar and the three dogs into his house without asking questions about what happened.

Mackenzie Wegener said...

Edgar takes small amounts from each house to cover his tracks, if he took too much, and the families noticed, he would get tracked down and get in serious trouble. I think Edgar is extremely intelligent in doing this, when trying to survive it is good to cover tracks so there are no fingers pointing at you. Since Edgar is so young he needs to stay out of trouble, if he were caught he would deal with the cops and would have to go back home. If I went to the front door to find a boy who is injured I would immediately help. I would take the dogs out back, bring the boy in, wash him up, give him clothes and then feed him. If he need more like I place to sleep I would offer that and help him with whatever else he needed.

Hannah Duschl said...

When Edgar rads the cottages in search of food he is very cautious about his portions, cleaning up after himself, and makes sure he leaves everything in the same place. He never takes everything of one certain food item, and he moves food to the front so it looks like there is more there. Which each cottage he seems to get better and better at it. He does this because he is publicly known as a missing person. He doesn't want the police to suspect he is there because then they will know the general area in which he is located. With Edgar and his dogs on foot they will not win in a race with cars and helicopters.

Destiny Clements said...

Because Edgar is a missing person, he makes sure that he is very cautious when stealing from the cottages. Edgar only takes small portions of food and he always puts everything back where he found it. He also knows that he has to be very careful when taking items from the houses because the police are looking for him. If he becomes careless and the owners of the cottages are able to see their houses were robbed, it would be a lot harder for Edgar to stay hidden.

If I were to open my front door and see a little boy with three dogs standing on my porch, I would have a completely different reaction than Henry. I would first let the boy and his dogs inside to wash up as well as give them food and water. After they settled in, I would ask the little boy why he was out in the woods by himself and where his family is. Unlike Henry though, I would also call the police. I understand that Henry felt that Edgar was “safe”, but I would call the police just in case his family was looking for him, or he was injured in some way.

Edgar doesn't want to steal. For a multitude of reasons; he doesn't want to lead the authorities to where he might be hiding out, it makes him feel morally wrong, and it reminds him of all that has happened. If I saw a little boy and three dogs sitting on my front porch I would be slightly anxious not knowing the story of how they happened to get here. I would let the little boy into the house but I would leave the dogs outside in an enclosed area. Calling the police while the little boy was changing or cleaning up in another room would be the first thing that I would do. Henry felt that Edgar was "safe" but you never fully know if the you are being lied to or not. By having the police come would ensure the safety of both myself and the little boy. Who knows, the little boys parents could be out looking for him and scared to death.

KaylaTracy said...

I think that Edgar is being so careful to make it look like he was never there and he didn't steal anything because if people noticed they would call the cops, and he would found out. If there was a boy with blood all over him and three large dogs on my porch my first reaction would be to panic. However, after the initial shock wore off I would let them into my house and clean them up. I didn't really think that it was surprising when Henry just let Edgar in because he saw that he needed help and he gave it to him. What I thought was weird about the situation was the Henry didn't really ask him any questions or call the police.

Jenna Felkey said...

Edgar tries to make it look like he doesn’t steal anything so that it doesn’t look suspicious. If there are multiple break-ins involving stealing food, the police could track Edgar’s path and catch him. Edgar has even found flyers inside cabins about his disappearance. When Edgar finds that Tinder’s paw had a large shard of glass stuck in the pad of his paw, Edgar will do anything to help him, even if it means getting caught. Edgar only wants the best for his dogs and he decides that Tinder’s health is more important at this point in time.
If I saw a boy and three dogs on my porch, I would probably be rather appalled by the scene and call 9-1-1 for help. Although in Edgar’s case, he wouldn’t have wanted to come up to my front porch. His entire plan would be foiled and his journey would be over when the cops arrived and realized it was him.

Edgar has to be careful to make it look like he didn't steal anything so no one will notice. It matters because there could be that one person who reports missing items to the police, who could possible believe that it's Edgar. Seeing a boy with blood all over him and three dogs would kind of freak me out, but I would help him in any way I could, seeing that something is wrong with one of the dogs. I would be curious as to why he is all alone and that he has three dogs with him. What I thought was surprising was how kind and caring Henry was and wanted to genuinely help Edgar. I was also shocked that he didn't call the police, and he let Edgar stay at his house. I'm gad Henry offered though since Edgar did need help and a decent meal.

Joey Joly said...

Edgar didn't want anyone to get suspicious and call the police because they might search for him there. It wasn't surprising that he wanted to help, but the fact that Henry didn't call the police is. That's what I would do if I saw a kid covered in blood on my porch.

Edgar is very precautious of stealing too much because he doesn't want the owners of the cabins knowing that they have been robbed. He wants to remain secretive and hidden, so that nobody know that he is even there. If I were in that situation, I would tell the boy to come inside and wash up. There is no way I couldn't leave a boy out in the woods covered in blood with an injured dog. Clearly though, he is running away from something, so I would ask him if he wanted me to call the police, or if he needed anything else. I would allow him to make his decisions, with only my help for his exposure. It shouldn't be someone else's choice to send Edgar home.

Corbin Leigh :) said...

Hes careful because he doesn't want the owners to find out. He also doesn't want the owners to report missing items to the police because then they would take a pretty good guess that its Edgar and hes in that area. Its important no one knows where Edgar is. Hes hiding. He cant be out in civilization.
If I was in that sort of situation where a boy is obviously in some trouble, id help him. If the boy came knocking on my door. I can help. I think what the guy does that's surprising is that he gets out a paper and pen for Edgar to write on before any sort of medical supplies. what I find surprising that the guy doesn't do, is call the cops, abumbulace, vet, whatever. He just goes and helps Edgar out. And then after all that, he lets Edgar stay with him. I think its the sweetest thing,

Hannah Kochendoerfer said...

The surprising thing the man does is allow Edgar to stay with him, without knowing anything about Edgar. The man feeds Edgar and his dogs and leaves his doors unlocked so that Edgar can come and go freely. The surprising thing the man does not do is tell the police where Edgar is, even though he can tell that Edgar is a runaway.

Maxwell Lezon said...

Like any good thief, Edgar doesn't want to leave a trail. If he gets caught then his freedom could become compromised. On top of that, these petty thefts aren't significant and he is careful not to have something small inflate.
Edgar cared so much about his dogs that his cover was less important than Tinder.
If I saw a boy with three larges dogs on my porch, I would get him inside and give him as much medical attention as I could possibly administer. Then, I would ask for a very clear story and decide what to do from there. My actions are similar to what the man did, however, I would definitely be more invasive with my questioning rather than accepting a story on paper like the man did.

Edgar needs food for himself and the dogs, so he must steal some. Obviously, if you are stealing something you are trying to not get caught. But for Edgar, even the trace of a burglary would put him in danger of being found. The cops could possibly follow him by the houses that have been robbed of food, and that is not what he wants. He takes a small amount of each thing he needs, making sure it isn't noticeable.
If I saw a little boy and 3 dogs on my porch, i would be shocked at first. I would then try to help him the best I could. I would call the police as well. But the surprising thing the man did was not call anyone. He didn't call an ambulance or the police. It wasn't surprising that the man helped Edgar, as most kind-hearted people would, but to not contact emergency personal is another thing.

Anna Parrish said...

Edgar's behavior towards the stealing is cautious in order to prevent himself from being caught. Edgar knows even the smallest bit of evidence could lead to Claude and the others finding him. Another reason is that Edgar does not enjoy stealing the food so he doesn't want to make it a regular activity by getting to over confident. This is a very smart move for Edgar that many kids his age would not even think of doing, and some would be overcome by their hunger and despair to get the food that they might get caught.

Jessica Duran said...

He is careful to try to go unoticed. When you only take a little bit of something, nothing big, no one really takes a double glance. He takes what he needs without ransacking the place. If I were to see a boy in the middle of the night covered in blood and surrounded by dogs, I'd be scared. I wouldn't open the door I would be cautious and ask what was wrong. Even if he just was a young boy, I don't know this kid is or what those dogs are capable of. So I'd be very careful but try my best to help.

He is willing to risk getting caught because he is hungry and he has to feed himself and the dogs, but if the police found his trail he would be easily caught. The police would have the advantage since he is on foot. If a bloody boy showed up on my steps with three dogs I would be wary. I would ask a lot of questions about what he did before I could make a decision whether to help him or not.

Edgar is very careful when breaking into the houses, mostly because he is a runaway. When he goes in he is cautious about the portion sizes that he takes. He only takes little of everything and makes sure everything is put back where it was when he got there so the owner does not suspect anything. If the owners of the cottage were able to see that they had been robbed it will just give the police more information of where to look for Edgar at.
If one night I were to open up my door and see dogs on either side of a young boy I would have handled the situation much differently. I would get my parents and probably stand back and watch how they handled it, but would for sure call the police, unlike Henry.

I would bring the boy inside to make sure he is alright and call the police about the dogs.

In Henry's situation I would have panicked and rushed to take care of the boy's wounds and get him serious help, but Henry kept his composure and helped Edgar without any other aid. I was surprised that Henry seemed tense because of the dogs. Most people, despite the size of the dog, are quick to pet dogs and give them attention and Henry was not that way at all.

Edgar makes certain to only steal what he thinks will go unnoticed. He always leaves a good amount of food behind, and he even arranges the remaining food in a way that would suggest that nothing was stolen. Although Edgar shows no remorse in stealing in order to survive, he is extremely wary of being caught. If a thievery were reported by one of his targets, the police would likely come and search the surrounding area. Also, the fact the houses were being raided of food (not money or valuables) would hint more towards a runaway than a typical burglar.

The most surprising thing that Henry does, in my opinion, is that he helps to clean Tinder’s wound at a moment’s notice. Also, Henry allows Edgar to stay in his home, and makes no attempt to contact the authorities (although Henry warns Edgar that this could be a possibility).

If this situation was presented to me I would be put in a deadlock situation. Part of me would want to help the boy because he may be injured and it is just the right thing to do. On the other hand, part of me would say I don't know if this boy is a criminal or was doing something mischievous. In the end however, I feel I would make the right decision

Edgar is pretty smart for his age, pretty sneaky too! Edgar takes small amounts of food from houses because he doesn't want to be noticed. If people started reporting stolen food, cops could track down the route Edgar was taking. It would make him much easier to find.
Honestly, if I found a boy covered in blood standing on my porch I would be terrified. I have it pictured in my head and it gives me chills thinking about it! I would definitely not act as well as Henry did. I would take the boy in, clean him up and try to help. One thing is for sure though, I would not be calm. Henry was very calm in the whole thing, and I have no idea how he did it! Henry didn't even call the police to report him. I thought it was so thoughtful for Henry to care about Edgar and try to help him.
