Epi's Stand

Source: http://www.dobermantalk.com
Claude immediately takes charge of the situation with Epi upon his arrival. Why hasn't he come out before this to help? Why did he feel that he needed to be asked to come?
We get a flashback to a darker day in Claude's history. After reading about his vet days and dog fighting connection, how believable is his earlier story about Gar's dog fighting past?
There is no doubt that Claude is exceedingly helpful in this chapter...gentle and caring with the injured dogs. Why is the flashback to the dog fight included in this chapter then?

Claude does not come out to help before this because no one asks him for help. No one tells him that Trudy has phenomena. He knows once Gar died, it will be harder for Trudy and Edgar to run the barn; however, he knows that Trudy is grieving from Gar’s death. Since Gar and Claude were fighting when Gar died, Trudy does not want to be around Claude while she grieves over Gar’s death. If Claude shows up at Trudy’s house, she would not be happy and would probably not accept his offer to help. After the dog fight, Trudy knows that she needs Claude’s help, and she finally gives in.

Gar’s dog fighting past is believable. Gar and Claude are brothers; even though they fought, they still would be together most of their time growing up. If Claude was involved in dog fights, most likely so was Gar. When Edgar tries to sneak down the stairs, Claude knows just where the quiet spots were. Claude most likely snuck out when he was younger which hints that he probably did dangerous things, such as getting involved in dog fights. Since Claude and Gar are brothers they most likely went to dog fights together.

The flashback is supposed to symbolized why he hasn't been much help, and that he overcome the flashback.

Claude didn't come to help before perhaps out of pride. He was kicked out before by Gar so him just showing up to help might upset Trudy. He doesn't want to go to a place where he is unwelcome. By waiting until he's asked for help he feels more needed and like that's where he should be so he can take control. The fight and Trudy's illness pushes the farm over the top so they do need him.
The earlier story of Gar is still believable. Gar is mentioned in this flashback dealing with the same things Claude is. They were brothers and from all the flashbacks given they seem to do a lot together, so it could be assumed that dog fight together.

Claude was kicked out of the home by Gar and has not been formally invited back, so even if he does want to come back, he stays his distance. Now that he has been asked for help, his pride isn't injured because he doesn't have to shamefully come back to the home. Since they have now asked him for help, he is in control because he is now the man of the house. The flashback is included to show that Claude's past. He knows how to take care of the dogs because he had to mend the wounds of dogs when he and Gar used to go to dog fights.

Claude felt that he had to be invited or asked because he was kicked out of the house and wanted to maintain distance from the family. He also knew that Trudy didn't want help with anything but was more than willing to come that night and treat the dogs' injuries.

Maybe Claude didnt want to go back to help earlier because he was kicked out by Gar. The flashback is used to show Claudes experience with the dogs and his knowledge on how to care for them.
