Part 5: Poison -- Edgar

Source: http://upload.wikimedia.org
Is there anything odd about Claude and Trudy not being home when Edgar arrived?
Why doesn't Edgar stay there instead of sleeping in the woods?
Why does Edgar leave the picture of Claude and Forte by the note?
"That was how it was sometimes. You put yourself in front of the thing and waited for whatever was going to happen and that was all. It scared you and it didn't matter...Sometimes you looked the thing in the eye and it turned away. Sometimes it didn't." What parts of the story might this be referring to?
Edgar knows that Claude found the note because his mother didn't come out calling for him, but that also means Claude didn't even tell her about the note. Why wouldn't he tell her?

Claude doesn't want to tell her because if he does then that would hurt their relationship.

Claude did not want Edgar's mom to find out about the note because as soon as she knew she would go out to find him. Claude couldn't let this happen because Glen and he had thought that Edgar might have pushed Glen's dad to his death rather than him falling. The two of them had planned to get Edgar alone and question him about the situation and see if they could get what they wanted to hear out of him. They wanted to do this before Edgar's mom knew he was home, and then that way Edgar would have a reason to just tell them so he could go home and Edgar's mom couldn't say no to the questioning. with Edgar's mom unaware of the note that gave them extra time to carry out their plan.

I think its odd that Claude and Edgars mother are just going along with their lives. Like going to the store. Edgar's still missing. I just thought It was odd.
Claude doesn't tell Edgar's mother about the note because Claude knows that she would drop everything and go and try and find him. But at the moment Claude doesn't want that because him and glen have some ideas for Edgar. I think Claude is just trying to get Edgar in trouble so Edgar will get off of Claude's case.

Claude doesn't want Edgar's mother to know about the note because it would screw up Claude and Glen's plan to interrogate Edgar. If She knew that Edgar was near home, she would go and look for him and would probably find him before Claude and Glen could get to him.

Edgar's reason for not sleeping in his family house is that he wants to see if Claude is aware that he (Edgar) knows of Claude's crime, as well as gauge his safety in returning. Although Edgar is likely aware that Claude has at least some suspicion of Edgar's knowledge about the murder, he desires see how strong Claude's suspicions truly are and how willing he is to act on those suspicions (will he set up some sort of trap, lie about the note, search for Edgar himself, etc). Claude's reson for not telling Trudy about the note is simple: he is hoping to devise some sort of plan to keep Edgar away from the Sawtelle farm and/or discover how much he knows. If Trudy knows of Edgar's plans to return, and then he does not return, then she will wonder what happened to him. Keeping her ignorant of the note allows Claude to work more freely in his work with Edgar.

I think Edgar leaves the picture as a taunt to Claude. He wants Claude to know that he knows the truth. Edgar knows that Claude has been lying to him the entire time, manipulating him. Claude has told many lies about Edgar's father, trying to make him out as a different, more violent person. Edgar knows that Claude has always been the violent one, not his father, and he wants Claude to know this as well.
